The nation’s oldest health institution was this week, the recipient of a very large quantity of linen from a Saint Lucian resident in Brooklyn, New York.
Minister for Health and Wellness, Senator Mary Issac and Executive Director at Victoria Hospital, Mrs. Jeanette Hughes received the donation from veteran Radio Talk Show Host, Sam “Juke Bwa” Flood on behalf of Martha Hilaire who was unable to be present.
In his brief remarks,Sam Flood lamented the lack of support given to Ms Hilare by the Saint Lucia Mission in New York and explained his involvement
“She called me and hence I got involved. Therefore, as a St. Lucian, typical St. Lucian, I was happy and up to now I am happy to be involved as to deliver the linen in the name of the Minister to Victoria Hospital which I refer to as ‘VantVyeFanm-la’. I was born there. So therefore, it is with pleasure and honour, being St. Lucian to be able to help our health system in this country”.
Mrs. Hughes in accepting the items on behalf of the Management and Staff of Victoria Hospital said that an institution as old as Victoria Hospital will definitely have challenges but the staff will not give up.
“ Victoria Hospital is a resource constraint institution. However, we have dedicated and committed workers who go over and above the call of duty to deliver the services. All of us know that healthcare is a very challenging service and we strive to meet the needs and expectations of the clientele, and sometimes it’s very difficult when persons are dealing with health issues to even explain to them a process. So this is one of the reasons, healthcare delivery is very challenging. It is not just at Victoria Hospital or in St. Lucia. It is worldwide. Delivering healthcare is very challenging because the resources are limited, the needs and the expectations of persons are sometimes way beyond what we can deliver and Victoria Hospital is very unique in the sense that we are dealing with a 120 year old plant, and we have challenges related to that.”
Minister Isaac who made some brief remarks was very grateful for the efforts made in sourcing the items and ensured they will reach the hospital clients.
“I want to say a special thank you to ‘Jouk bwa’ for assisting us this morning. He has gone through the whole process of trying to get this here to us, and inspite of the challenges, here we are receiving this today. On behalf of the people of St.Lucia, I want to also thank the source/supplier, Ms Hilaire who made this available to us and to say that we do have quite a few Good Samaritans in our diaspora. It is always very welcomed when we receive gifts like this, that we can actually put to use.”
Several hospital officials and media representatives were present for the presentation ceremony which took place on Monday 5th September at Sam Flood’s business establishment.
