Press Release:-The Saint Lucia Rugby Football Union hosted the final in the Community Rugby 7s on Sunday 25th September at La Clery Playing Field.
The three clubs on the island played a round robin type tournament in various communities over a two month period. The winners of the tournament were presented with a challenge trophy. This year the games were played in the communities of Corinth, Laborie, Soufriere and La Clery.
Whiptail Warriors (Female) emerged victorious in the female division with 17 points edging out VBCC Stingers (Female) by a mere three points. An elated team captain, Chyenne Samuels, received the trophy for the triumphant team.
VBCC Stingers (Male) completely dominated the male division. They attained the maximum number of points, 24. In second place was Whiptail Warriors (Male) with 13 points and Fighting Mongoose (Male) with 7 points was third. Coach and team captain, Jerry Charles, received the trophy for VBCC Stingers (Male)
The President of the Saint Lucia Rugby Union, Roger Butcher, stated that the tournament which started on the 14th August 2016 had three main objectives:
- Introduce the game of rugby to the various communities around the island.
- Provide a basis to select and invite the best players to train for selection on the national 7s team.
- Give the recent attendees of the Rugby Americas North (RAN) level 1 referee training course exposure in officiating matches.
The objectives were met and far surpassed expectations.
The Union has received invitations to several regional competitions. Entry into these competitions is being considered. Locally plans are afoot to hosting the first ever beach rugby competition later in the year.
In terms of the growth of the sport, next year will see the Union implementing the “GET INTO RUGBY” program in both primary and secondary schools. At the senior level next year will see the addition of possibly two more teams and the commencement of a national 15 – a – side rugby league.
