Acting PM: Schools to Remain Closed and Citizens Urged to be Vigilant as System Approaches

Statement by Acting Prime Minister of Saint Lucia Hon. Lenard Montoute on Approaching Weather System: – Fellow Saint Lucian over the last few hours the Saint Lucia Met Services has been monitoring an area of low pressure situated to the east of the Windward Islands.

According to the Meteorological Services, as at 4:00 pm today, this area of low pressure was located approximately 300 miles or 482 kilometers east of Barbados. The system show signs of development and is moving west to west northwest at approximately 15 to 20 mph or 24 to 32 km/h. On this track the center is expected to cross the island chain near the Central Windward Islands tomorrow morning Wednesday 28th September, 2016.

Associated with this system are heavy rains and tropical storm force winds in squalls consequently, in an effort to preserving life and property I have decided schools will remain closed tomorrow Wednesday 28th September, 2016.

Following my NEMAC meeting this morning I am satisfied that NEMO is in a state of readiness and that all agencies are on full alert including the District Disaster Committees. Additionally, as of 6pm the Commissioner has cancelled leave for all officers.

I urge all citizens to continue monitoring the system and to listen to official updates from NEMO and the MET Office. Residents in areas prone to flooding and landslides are asked to be extremely vigilant and take all necessary preemptive action to safeguard themselves and their property.
