IWaSP handing over and commissioning of a 75,000 imperial gallons water tank

On  Tuesday, September 27, 2016, the Saint Lucia ‘International Water Stewardship Program’ (IWaSP) hosted the successful conclusion of the first partnership project through the handing over and commissioning of a 75,000 imperial gallons water tank at La Haut, Laborie, in the south of the island.

The partnership is made up of the Water and Sewerage Company Inc. (WASCO), the Windward and Leeward Brewery Ltd. (HEINEKEN), and the two international IWaSP partners DfID & GIZ.

The feature remarks were presented by Sen. Hon. Jimmy Henry, Minister in the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries, Physical Planning, Natural Resources and Co-operatives.

The IWaSP partnership in general and the La Haut project in particular aim to secure water supply chains for communities and businesses alike through development partnerships between government, civil society organizations, and private business partners.

Water is also seen as the focal crosscutting resource when it comes to adaptation to climate change. Interventions in the water sector are believed to mitigate the impacts of climate change through more effective management of water resources, for example better water demand management, improved water conservation, and climate-smart land use systems. They will reduce vulnerabilities and risks of higher climate variability in space and time, and higher incidences of extreme hydro-meteorological events, ranging from prolonged periods of drought in the Caribbean to extreme flooding.

Reducing vulnerability to climate change-induced flood and drought also requires decisions about issues such as climate-smart landscape approaches and planning control or fiscal incentives such as subsidized insurance or government disaster relief to occupy hazard-prone lands. Merely reacting to extreme weather events only multiplies resultant environmental, financial and social costs!
