SLP: Government vindictive

Press Release:-The Saint Lucia Labour Party has been advised that the Government of Saint Lucia has decided to terminate the construction of the NIC financed Administrative Complex in Vieux Fort.

This project was commenced by the NIC prior to the General Election and was intended to serve the people of the South, from Soufriere to Micoud, by ensuring Government owned accommodation for the delivery of vital government services.

Further, the construction was intended to boost the economic recovery of the island and provide badly needed employment opportunities to the people of the south.

It seems that this Government has no compunction when it comes to wasting public funds to serve its vindictive and discriminatory ends. To date, at least $10.0 million has been spent on the project in preparing designs and undertaking site preparation and foundation works.

Why then, should the project be terminated when such expenditure has been incurred? The Administrative Complex has now suffered the same fate of the Soufriere Square which was at least 80% completed when it was unceremoniously stopped by Prime Minister Chastanet.

The Saint Lucia Labour Party is fully aware that the action of the UWP is purely to victimise the people of the south for consistently supporting the Saint Lucia Labour Party and humiliate former Prime Minister and Parliamentary Representative for Vieux Fort South, Dr Kenny D. Anthony by sending a message that “the UWP is now in charge.”

According to the Saint Lucia Labour Party, “when the SLP was re-elected to office in 2011, it met plans to construct a financial complex at Pointe Seraphine.

Despite its misgivings about the location of the complex and its cost, the SLP did not stop the project because it understood the need to provide employment particularly to persons in the Castries Basin. It is decisions like the arbitrary stoppage of the Soufriere Square and the Administrative Complex at the whim of the Prime Minister that causes, festers and sustains political anger in our country. These decisions by Allen Chastanet are unjustifiable, wicked and vindictive.”
