The dwelling house was completely ablaze when the Saint Lucia Fire Service arrived.

The occupants said they were fortunate to escape with their lives given the swiftness with which the fire spread.

Neighbours who left their houses to investigate when an alarm was raised at about 1:00 a.m. could do little but watch the fire eat up the house, belching thick smoke into the early morning sky.

The occupants told the Times that they had only recently commenced renovation of the building.
