T&T: Two held in deadly ‘prank’

Trinidad Express:-POLICE have detained two people for questioning in the deaths of Khemraj Maharaj and Mahase Motilal, who were found tied together, eyebrows shaved off and lipstick on their faces on Friday.

Investigators believe that the men were victims of a prank which turned deadly.

The suspects were taken into custody on Saturday.

Motilal, 47, was cremated following a service at his family’s home at Tarouba Road, Marabella, yesterday.

The men were discovered outside the Las Vegas Recreation Club, Tarouba in South Trinidad on Friday.

Police said they were both tied together at the waist with a piece of rope used to fasten a UNC election banner to a utility pole.

Pieces of electrical tape were placed above their lips to mimic moustaches.

An autopsy performed by pathologist Dr Valery Alexandrov found that the men had been poisoned.

But they were not beaten or force-fed the poison.

Alexandrov said the men died within half-an-hour of eating a meal of rice and vegetables and drinking a brownish substance.
Relatives said the men were both heavy drinkers but were not violent.

Maharaj was a former Caroni (1975) Ltd worker turned handyman and Motilal worked as a PH driver.

Maharaj was a father of three, while Motilal was not married and had no children.

Relatives said the men were not close friends, but knew each other well.
