Castries Mayor,Peterson Francis, has told reporters here that security in the City of Castries is very close to his heart.
He promised that soon citizens will see an improvement of the management of security in the capital.
The Mayor spoke against the backdrop of recent shootings in the city which resulted in one fatality.
Francis expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and those who were injured.
The Mayor asserted that the situation of crime in Castries need to be addressed.
He said he did not believe that the previous board of the Castries Constituencies Council (CCC) understood its role.
“The City is ours to manage,” he declared.
“What has been happening is instead of we complementing the police, the police are supposed to complement us in the security of the City,” the Mayor explained.
He said the CCC had undertaken an initiative to send eighteen names of prospective City Constables to be vetted by the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF).
Francis said the names had been sent back to the CCC but regrettably, the names were at the office from November 2, 2016, but only came to his attention two days ago.
He declared that had be been aware of that the eighteen recruits would have been on the road.
Francis said that soon there will be thirty new City Constables on the road.
He disclosed that the first complement of City Police Constables will be 50.
The Mayor said there will be patrols around the clock.
He said the eighteen City Constables who were recently recruited will be on the road by the end of this month.
