Press Release:-On Saturday, 17th December 2016, the Saint Lucia Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) is hosting National Day Sevens Tournament at Gros Islet playing field from 10:00 am.
2016 has been a sensational year for rugby in Saint Lucia and the Union is ensuring to end the year on a high note. Local male and female teams will be going head to head for the chance to be the champs.
A female team from Guadeloupe is participating as well. The visiting team of 12 players and 3 coaches will be competing against 3 Saint Lucian female teams.
As always, the male teams are expected to bring in high intensity matches as each try to vie for the win. In 2015, VBCC Stingers male and female teams walked away as the overall champs of the National Day Tournament. Stingers’ close rival, Whiptail Warriors, is looking to graduate from second place this year.
The competition promises to be an electrifying one as this will be the last chance for the teams to redeem themselves. The female category guarantees to be much more thrilling as Guadeloupe joins the roster of local teams.
SLRFU has made strides in providing opportunity for local competitions this year by hosting three local tournaments. This included the first ever beach rugby tournament in Saint Lucia.
These activities aimed to strengthen the four established clubs as well as encourage the development of new ones on the island. For 2017, SLRFU will be focusing in introducing rugby to secondary schools and starting an under 19 15s league.
