Victoria Hospital is back to normal after a fire Thursday afternoon in its maintenance department.
The Executive Director of the hospital, Jeanette Hughes, said because the maintenance department is below the Renal Unit, patients in the unit were evacuated to ensure their safety.
Hughes disclosed that at about 4:35 pm yesterday, Victoria Hospital management was alerted to smoke emanating from the bio-medical section of the maintenance department.
She said the fire service was quickly contacted.
“It took us some time; with the efforts of the fire service and the team members at Victoria Hospital we were able to get the entire situation under control,” Hughes stated.
She explained that the patients who were evacuated are back in the Renal Unit.
Hughes expressed gratitude to many persons who assisted the hospital, including Prime Minister Allen Chastanet and Economic Development Minister, Guy Joseph.
The Victoria Hospital Executive Director revealed that the two left a meeting to go to the fire scene to offer support.
She also thanked the men and women of the fire service who responded very quickly and the team at the hospital – nurses, doctors,orderlies, domestic assistants and security personnel.
“All of us came together as a team and we were able to save the hospital from any possible damage,” Hughes said.
She observed that the fire service has identified the area where the fire started.
Hughes explained that she is awaiting a complete report.
