Bandits rob visitors to Soufriere waterfall

Police are investigating a report that three masked  bandits held up a number of  persons visiting the New Jerusalem waterfall in Soufriere on Thursday afternoon.

The incident occurred at about 2:30 p.m., according to information obtained by the Times.

One of the robbery victims is reported to have been hit on the head by one of the bandits.

There were conflicting reports regarding what weapons were carried by the criminals, whether guns or knives – or both.

However it is reported that about seven locals and one non-national who were visiting the waterfall at the time were relieved of their valuables, including a diamond ring.

The non-national was identified as an American citizen  who has Saint Lucian parents and  is visiting a cousin here for the holidays.

Don’t you think the information you seem to know should be disclosed to Police rather than making a comment on here!

This is why tourists don’t trust lucian people. they either rip you off when selling you something at the market/ taxi ride etc. or they outright rob you completely. These monkeys should stay in africa.

“These monkeys should stay in Africa” – are you serious?

You know there are many countries in Africa with equal development to St Lucia, and even greater. So don’t think all of a sudden you better than all African countries.

And who the hell are monkeys?

What a disgusting comment. If this was said by a white or Indian person it would be outright condemned, so why should a black person say it?

We are all descendent of monkeys.

Well that was my point. If the go to africa they will see how much we squander this country.

You ever wonder why most lucians never come back when they travel abroad? because they understand that lucians are ignorant and close minded. Most only think of furthering themselves. This manifests itself either in the form of stealing or doing a poor job.

Why do you think nina comptom opened a restaurant selling carribean food in America? because she knows that lucians are ignorant and unappreciative of talent.

I’m fed up of hearing news about people being robbed or assaulted. I know things are hard but this is becoming ridiculous. Every time you turn on the news you hear about tourists being robbed. Like seriously? These thieves are becoming so bold that they’re doing this during the day. We depend heavily on the tourism industry and if this continues we will soon have to gravitate towards something new to generate income for the country. When will we go back to the days where we could leave our doors opened or unlocked while we slept or went to town to run errands ? We need prayers and the Lord now more than ever. Our little paradise is becoming more and more unsafe. Sigh !

When most people work for less than 4:50 an hour when the capitalist and the establishment exploit most of the locals when courts charge u 45 percent interest rate for inferior goods there will always be crime

Thank You so much! Some talking sense.

You are so so correct with your comment.

And our politicians are taking us for fools and idiots (some of us are) by actively encouraging these foreign investors to reap off our people.

Introduce a minimum wage, if there’s one in place then increase it.

Our Government has NO NEGOTIATORS NONE at all. The people who are in charge of overseeing and signing deals and projects don’t negotiate.

they literally BOW to the negotiators request, demands etc. hence why our lands a being sold right under our feet.

Excessively focused on Tourism one of the most volatile markets. They get it wrong so many times.

This is a typical example, Soufriere and surrounding areas are where we have our best natural attractions.

Can’t the Government put armed guides at all these attractions on lets say a 9-5 shift.

Hotels and excursion operators will know this and arrange they excursions to these attractions between the times when armed guides would be present.

On our visit to St. Lucia my wife and I found all the people there to be quite friendly and gracious. Even ‘Tony with the orange shoes’ who scammed us for $40. He was so pleasant and polite, we took it in stride, knowing it was just his way of making a living. On the way to the airport we saw him again, and I wished him well. I’m sure it surprised him. I don’t condone crime at all, but one has to understand the difficulty of living on a small island with limited opportunities. Some can’t cope, so they turn to crime. It’s sad, because eventually they will suffer for it.
