Record-Setting Quarterfinal Weekend in Veterans Football

The knockout stages of the 2016-2017 Veterans Football Tournament kicked off with a record-breaking weekend at Philip Marcellin Grounds in Vieux Fort, as the Flow Plate Championship quarterfinals were played.

On Saturday, Vieux Fort South got things underway with a clinical 4-0 win over Behind The College All Stars. In a battle of former champions, it was the home team that looked much the better from the start, getting two goals in either half.

Congorians got off to a flying start against Laborie, scoring twice in the first 20 minutes. But the Rasta men paid the price for having too thin a bench, with just one substitute, and the waves of fresh legs at the disposal of the Lab Vets, combined with some comedic goalkeeping late in the match, saw the Republic winning 6-2.

Gros Islet marched to the biggest win of this year’s series, demolishing whipping boys Mon Repos Sharks 8-0. And it could have been worse for the 16th Ball winners, looking resplendent nonetheless in their brand new uniforms. Mon Repos exited the tournament as the only team not to have scored a goal, conceding 21.

And in the most even matchup of the weekend, Anse La Raye and Dennery All Blacjs played to the only goalless first half, before Benjamin Gabriel prised open the All Blacks backline, leading to three second-half goals for Anse La Raye.

Gros Islet now faces Vieux Fort South in the semifinals, whilst Anse La Raye will face Laborie. Both games will be played on 21 January, at a venue to be determined.
