Saint Lucia records another shooting death

Saint Lucia has recorded another homicide with the shooting death this morning of a man at Cedars.

A resident of the area reported hearing someone scream twice, after which gunshots were heard.

The incident occurred at around 5:20 am, it is reported.

Sources told the Times that police investigators on the scene recovered a bag which is believed to have belonged to the deceased, leading to speculation that robbery was the motive behind the shooting.

The deceased has been identified as Peter Satney, 52, of Sunbilt.

He is reported to have been shot three times in the abdomen.

This morning’s shooting follows a homicide yesterday at the bottom of Rose Hill in which Peter Desir, known as ‘Top Man’, sustained a single gunshot wound to the head and died on the spot.

It is reported that a lone gunman walked up to Desir as he sat in his vehicle and opened fire before escaping.

That incident occurred after 4:pm.

A spate of shooting deaths since the beginning of the new year has created unease among citizens who are concerned that killers seem to strike with impunity and at will at any time of the day or night.

“We are the ones that are sleeping –  these fellows not sleeping,” an irate citizen told the Times.

Citizens are also concerned about what they perceive to be a shocking disregard for life.

Some have called on social media for a robust police response akin to the controversial Operation Restore Confidence in which some 12 suspected criminals were killed by the police between 2010 and 2011 during a violent crime wave, prompting allegations of extra-judicial executions by law enforcers and triggering the IMPACS report.

The report found, among other things,  that the police staged situations and planted weapons on suspects.
