Alliance Francaise hosts play for Nobel Laureate Festival

CASTRIES, Saint Lucia – January 30, 2017 – The Alliance Française is pleased to be part of the Nobel Laureate Festival of 2017 which was a celebration of Saint Lucia’s two Nobel Laureates, Sir Derek Walcott and Sir Arthur Lewis.  The Festival, which is organized by the Nobel Laureate Festival Committee under the Chairmanship of the Governor General, Dame Pearlette Louisy,  takes place from January 15 – February 4.

On Wednesday, January 25th, The Alliance Française presented an excerpt of the play Salome directed by Travis Weekes of Saint Lucia and was followed by a Panel Discussion with the Topic ‘Linkages between Kweyol and French’, moderated by Stephane Dovert – Regional Counselor for Cooperation at the French Embassy to the OECS Member States and Barbados in Castries.  This is the first time that Alliance Française is part of the official Program of activities for the Nobel Laureate Celebrations.

The play ‘Salome’ originally written in French by Oscar Wilde, was translated into Kwéyòl by veteran dramatist Allan Weekes.  The father son team of Allan and Travis Weekes is well known for their excellent Kwéyòl Theatre productions.

This project was very exciting as it was performed in French and Kwéyòl spoken simultaneously, with actors Richard Ambroise and Tasha ‘Wendy’ Sealy of Saint Lucia and Emmelyne Octavie and Roland Zalian of French Guiana.

‘Salome’ was used as a stimulus for a panel discussion which followed the play – the topic being Linkages between French and Kéwyòl in language, literature and culture. The panel for the evening  included, Dame Pearlette Louisy, as the special guest alongside Paule Turmel-John and Travis Weekes.

Wednesday, January 25, The Alliance Francaise was honored to host these two events under the auspices of the Governor General, Dame Pearlette Louisy and the play.   ‘Salome’ took place at The Pyramid, Point Seraphine, Castries. The public was invited to these events with free admission.
