PM concerned about US/ Mexico rhetoric

Prime Minister, Allen Chastanet, has expressed concern about United States/Mexico rhetoric.

“I have to say that I was a bit concerned and  taken aback by the rhetoric that has been existing between Mexico and the United States – I am not sure I understand why. I obviously don’t have all the facts in front of me,” Chastanet told a news conference this morning.

He said Mexico was a developing country.

According to Chastanet, the country has to be applauded for what it has achieved in the last twenty years, which has resulted in Mexico being a developed state which participates on the world stage and should probably be considered as one of the G 20 group of economies.

The Prime Minister observed that Mexico has reached out to the Caribbean and done a lot of work in the region.

“It concerns me that it could be perceived  that the relationship has become antagonistic and it does not augur well for Mexico and as a result, it does not augur well for us,” he told today’s news conference, asserting that there was need to band together to ensure that the principle of stronger borders is one that the United States will uphold.

On January 26, Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto faced off with US President Donald Trump on Twitter.

They both took credit for cancelling a meeting  they were scheduled to have in Washington DC on January 31.

Political commentators and the Mexican public had been asking for a cancellation of the meeting after Trump decided to stick to his position that Mexico must pay for a wall along the US-Mexico border.

The online standoff was seen an embarrassment for President Pena, who has advocated for dialogue with Trump.

Chastanet declared that was early in the new administration of President Donald Trump.

“Hopefully as time goes by, information that he has that maybe we don’t know will come out to justify what he is doing,” he stated.

However, Chastaned disclosed that the world reaction  is his reaction, since recent developments are a marked  ‘huge’ departure from what obtained in the past.
