Integrated Healthcare for the Elderly

On January 27 through the 28th, healthcare officials from the U.S. as well as the Caribbean, joined Saint Lucia’s Alzheimer’s Association at the National Skills Development Centre in View Forte. This first annual gathering of Physicians, Nurses, Pharmacists, Physiotherapists, Social Workers and Allied Health Staff connected for the sole purpose to “provide live ongoing, relevant and accredited, continuing education opportunities for healthcare professionals in Saint Lucia and the wider Eastern Caribbean in order to promote development and optimal patient care.”

Nurse Posvar President of Saint Lucia’s Alzheimer’s Association and CEO of The Angel’s of The West Indies had this to say of the conference: “The conference was both informative and interactive. The statistical information in relation to the growing elderly population confirms the need for a Dementia plan of action to be in place with the Saint Lucia government as well as other non government health systems. The statistical information also showed the imbalance of those elderly in need of proper care, then there are of elderly trained healthcare providers. Saint Lucia is already seeing and feeling the effects of this ongoing epidemic.”

The Saint Lucia Alzheimer’s Association members in attendance were Nurse Posvar, Philipa Hunte and Nikita Alexander. Dr. Rosanna Mars and her students from the Atlantic University were also on hand as well as other healthcare professionals from Saint Lucia.

On a side note, the Saint Lucia Alzheimer’s Association is also proud to be the winner of the most informative poster presentation at this conference.
