Saint Lucians and Haitians constitute the bulk of foreign workers in Martinique, the publication Martinique 1ere has reported.
However the publication notes that despite criticism of the presence of foreign workers, the Labour Department has said that the situation is due to the absence of a skilled labour force.
According to the Labour Department, more than five hundred foreigners signed job contracts last year and are generally passing through Martinique.
The foreign workers are found mainly in the banana and construction industries.
According to reports, some of the workers are hired at the request of companies that do not always find the skills required on the spot.
A company may decide to make an employee available to one of its subsidiaries based in Martinique, or, as authorized by the European Union, the employee is sent by his employer to another member state to work there temporarily, it was reported.
The Labour Department has said that it ensures that everything is done to find qualified candidates first in Martinique and non-nationals are recruited only if the searches do not succeed.
