Barbados bears down on tax cheats

Barbados Nation:-GOVERNMENT is trying to arrest the mischief of individuals selling properties and then absconding without settling their tax obligations.

But Minister of Industry Donville Inniss has said other law abiding Barbadians have recourse to the law courts should they be concerned about any possible infringement of their constitutional rights.

His comments were made during debate in the House of Assembly yesterday on the Barbados Revenue Authority Bill 2017 which includes the controversial requirement for a tax clearance certificate to access certain services such as land conveyances.

The amendments would require applicants to satisfy the BRA that no taxes were due under the taxing acts; all taxes, interest and penalties accrued have been paid; or an amount equal to not less than ten per cent deposited with the Authority and an agreement made for scheduled payments to liquidate the sums owed –
