SLP urges reinstatement of laptop programme

Press Release:-The Saint Lucia Labour Party is horrified by comments made by Prime Minister Allen Chastanet on a local radio call-in programme where he said, that there was no budgetary allocation for laptops made available to students by the Labour Government. Hence the reason why the UWP government was not guaranteeing laptops to students for the year 2017.

It is passing strange that the Prime Minister would cast blame at the Labour Party for his government’s failure to make the Computer Literacy education of the children of Saint Lucia a priority.

The Prime Minister’s excuse is inaccurate as it has been clearly stated that the computers made available in 2016 to our children was a gift from the Government of Taiwan. The UWP Government should have ensured that the gift was received again this year. We are aware that the Government of Taiwan was willing to provide the computers in 2017.

The UWP Government should explain how activities such the consultancies, contracts and audits which were NOT budgeted could have been provided for. In the same way, if not budgeted for, the computers could have been treated in likewise manner.

In any event, the SLP wishes to point out that the fiscal year ends in March 2017 and there is adequate time for the UWP government to make the allocation for computers in its 2017 – 2018 budget.

These excuses are misleading and demonstrate the low priority that the government has placed on the preparation of the children of Saint Lucia for the world of work that demands computer literacy.

The Saint Lucia Labour Party is calling on the government to re- instate the laptop initiative immediately.

Seeing that CAPE and CSEC are now moving towards e-examinations, it is a shame that students will no longer be receiving laptops. Let’s hope come May-June Exams they can find money somewhere to furnish the schools with laptops and computers for the paper 1 exam.

My SLP Brethren, avoid talking about the laptops. If they wanted their children to be Educated in this technologically advanced world and also access to information that they need in their everyday schooling, then they would have Voted us in. But as you can are, they didn’t. Because the same way they don’t value education, their children and themselves, so they see this as an unworthy piece of equipment given to their children, free of any Charges.
This is the mind of the Slaves. They will even sacrifice their own children.
So, allow them to harvest their fruits and say Nothing.

Please spear me this bovine excrement. The SLP was voted out of office because of their inability to manage the country’s economy, don’t forget the first three years of negative growth. This narrative you’re engage in is nothing more than an appeasement for political sycophant.

There is a significant amount of emerging research to indicate that laptop programmes have no impact on student performance. The national results tell a similar story. There has been no upward movement in student performance since the introduction of the laptop program. Educational decisions should be based on evidence not on politics!!!

Dude, not because you support a political party must you also be WO retarded. You are dealing with People with real issues. Don’t support things that impact negatively against the poor.

I agree why continued a program when it has no impact on the country, grades are not getting better. So is best we do otherwise upgrade the central library.

Children in developed countries do not receive laptops. They use laptops at school. Only children with learning difficulties should receive laptops to help them over come their difficulties.
Parents can buy expensive cellphone, ipads and tablets yet want the government to provide laptops for their children to use for watching porn , playing games and watching movies. The government should the money to provide employment for the children when they have completed school. Ensure that children have access to computers at school that’s good enough.

Well laptops, long ago people did just fine without laptops, this thing they call technology is not for all only for some, i truly dont believe that every child needs a laptop what time do they find to use laptop’s in the way it was intended to be use. Some of them even sell these same laptop’s,Look at the St.Marys college all these break ins at the school.Fence cut and weapons confiscated.Am thinking kids not interested in laptops when they are setting up their schools to be robbed to get these laptop’s.to sell They aint researching nothing.Do something else with that money let them go to the library.

Reading some of the comments there….those who are against the student getting the laptops are so illiterate. Some student would not know whT. LAptop is it wasn’t for this program. There are parents out there who are unable to provide this kind of stuff for their kids and the kids don’t have any mean to access one cause of the poverty rate.its a blessing that the former government was able to bring such a program to give eAch child a chance. Making them feel equal. It’s up to those who don’t use it the right way. Blaming all is not the Nswer cause some kids use it to help improve their self. The program should continue. Positive growth for the future generation. Remember not all parents can afford it and at times it’s hArd to give bus care to go school far less to go to an internet cafe to get information for school projects. Not because some of you all can afford it that I should be selfish. Now this government can do another positive act by setting bus system to help these kids get to school. Lots of kids end up staying home cause they parent had no money for bus care. Bring Sly one stap forward free school bus for our kids. Who vex loose cause it’s all about improving our country. Barbados st.maarten and other island have it. Also compulsery healthcare for families. Somthing to think about. Make your ground sp atleast the ppl see you all arevworking in their favor.

I am totally with you in agreement with all you said here. Times are changing and the country need to move forward. I know children who got these laptops and did put them to good use, these children, they couldn’t afford to have one. The laptop program I believe is very beneficial for the children and should be reinstated.
