General Post Office (GPO) workers stayed away from work today as efforts were being made to address a problem of mold infestation and poor air quality at their place of employment.
The Industrial Liaison Officer of the Saint Lucia Civil Service Association (CSA), Hayden Forde, explained that a company was recommended to do cleaning over the weekend but did not manage to complete the job.
Forde said as a result, the estimated more than 30 workers went home.
He explained that the company had indicated that it would be wise for the employees to return to work on Wednesday.
Forde explained however that this has to be confirmed by the Ministry of the Public Service.
He denied that the GPO workers had taken industrial action, explaining that they were merely staying away from the current situation at their work place.
“We don’t compromise when it comes to health and safety,” Forde said.
He disclosed that the situation at the GPO was making employees sick.
