PM: Saint Lucia has ‘grossly’ underperformed

Prime Minister, Allen Chastanet has said that based on its potential in agriculture, tourism, manufacturing  and other sectors, this country has grossly underperformed.

Chastanet was addressing a presentation ceremony today for the ‘Pearl of the Caribbean’ project at the Sandals Grande Saint Lucian Spa and Beach resort.

He explained that this Island’s underperformance was the main reason for the $US 2.6 billion project being undertaken by Desert Star Holdings (DSH) in the South of Saint Lucia.

According to the Prime Minister, the impact of Saint Lucia’s underperformance is felt in Vieux Fort.

“When you look at the potential of Vieux Fort, it screams at you as to what that potential is,” Chastanet said.

He observed that Vieux Fort already has an international airport, a deep water harbor and a lot of flat land.

Nevertheless Chastanet said the community is one of the most deprived areas of the country.

“Not only has that been working to the detriment of the people of the South, but more importantly it has been working to the detriment of the people of Saint Lucia,” he explained.

The Prime Minister said he believes it is important for Saint Lucians to control their own destiny.

“I hate things when they happen by chance – when you have to depend on luck to make things happen,” Chastanet told his audience.

He asserted that if Saint Lucians want to control their own destiny, they have to make some bold and courageous decisions.

According to Chastanet, if those decisions are not made nothing will change.

Well, let’s just wait and see what the current PM will do abut the situation. So far I have heard a lot of fancy talk, but I have not seen the development strategy that will underpin efforts to improve the situation. One thing I know is that the people of St. Lucia wll not accept any excuses when the time comes.

People, comrades countrymen for once could we not be honest with ourselves and shun political Hypocrisy with such a life changing issue as facing this nation.
We all and more so our children, in short, posterity face the success or failure of this DSH project. The size of this project for St Lucia is significant so at all cost political tribalism in the assessment should be no part in the evaluation and planing.
This article seems not to blame any particular one in the political divide, a good start indeed and from this should you politicians not meet outside parliament and in a bipartisan manner use informed and expert way DISCUSS the way forward. What are the concerns, the benefits, the impacts and how best to approach them.
Time to set aside intellectual dishonest and political masquerade for selfish agendas.
The time to move is NOW. I beseech you Hon. PM and Hon. Bro. Pierre. I am volunteering to be the unbiased chairman. I am not kidding let’s not make it simple but professional.

You don’t sell off your resources, in order to develop it. We need industry. We are focusing on quick returns rather than long term steady gains. You ever heard of plasma torch technology to take care of recycling and produce electricity, it’s being done in Sweden. This would help us become energy sufficient, honey production, animal husbandry and proper slaughter house and packaging facility, the growing of bamboo and commercial hemp, for recycling to produce flooring, gardening, eating and storage utensils, paper. Retirement homes ie 3to 5 floors buildings targeting foreigners………

Create an environment that encourages our people to become entrepreneurs. Duty-free concessions on items for all which would encourage our people to start business as imports would be far less expensive encouraging employment cutting down of unemployment. But ensure laws that protect the environment are enforced, like dumping of waste, tree cutting, watch rodney bay. Building near rivers. Cutting down on bank charges and interest rates, they act like parasites. Look up “the truth behind banking”.. .. I care not who makes the laws give me control of a country’s money supply.

There is political distrust everywhere in the world now. God, put a hand. I have been living in NY for 30 yrs. I have accomplished the American dream and now my spouse and I are looking forward to retiring home – St Lucia. America is not the same like before, It seem from what I am reading St Lucia is also not the same as before so, where do I go? Political chaos everywhere. Politicians need to remember they work for the people especially the poor, the disadvantaged. They lie just to be elected. When will we start trusting the things they say. Always mission unaccomplished. All talk, money in their pockets, their friends and it is all about them. Heaven help us. God is the time nearing? What a world we live in now. I worry about my grandkids and greatgrand.
