Sky News:-It’s been billed as an “America First” budget but millions of people in the US could suffer as a result of Donald Trump’s proposed spending.
The blueprint is the most dramatic shift in government spending since Ronald Reagan. It includes a proposed drop in investment beyond US borders.
Peacekeeping missions, developing countries and humanitarian assistance could experience a big drop in funding. That fits with the America First theme.
But those cuts aren’t enough to pay for his $54bn (£43bn) reinvestment in the military.
The other areas that could lose out can also be defined as America First in their aims.
It’s important to note that this budget is far from a done deal and there are numerous obstacles ahead. Currently this is a political statement of intent.
The sharpest domestic cuts would be felt by the Environmental Protection Agency, which the president believes has stifled economic growth through too much regulation.
That hits climate change research and Barack Obama’s plans to limit carbon emissions.
Programmes to clean up the Chesapeake Bay or the Great Lakes would no longer get government funding.
The housing and development department which tackles homelessness could see $6bn worth of cuts.
