Journalist Lawrence James dies

Veteran Journalist, Lawrence James, passed away Tuesday at Victoria Hospital after a long illness according to sources close to the family.

James, who started his journalism career in 1979, was a graduate of the International Institute for Journalism in Berlin, Germany; and the Caribbean Institute of Mass Communication (CARIMAC), UWI, Mona, Jamaica.

The veteran journalist worked with the Government Information Service (GIS) as Information Assistant, The VOICE Newspaper where he held the positions of Sub-Editor and Assistant Editor and  the Mirror Newspaper which in December last year announced his appointment as Editor.

He has been described as having been the first and only journalist in Saint Lucia to capture four awards (print or electronic) at any one ceremony of the then Saint Lucia Media Workers Association (SLMWA) Journalism Awards Ceremony in 1992.

James was also actively involved in a number of organisations including the Saint Lucia cadet Corps where he reached the rank of Major before retiring in 2013.

In 2016 he was awarded the National Service Medal  for long and dedicated service to the Saint Lucia Cadet Corps and the Community.

He fought a good fight, and many of us would never have thought that he would survive his condition for so long. Our condolences go out to his son and his mother. Rest in peace, Lawrence.
