SLP outraged over ‘suppression’ of protest

Press Release:The Saint Lucia Labour Party has expressed outrage over the decision of the Allen Chastanet Government to send armed SSU officers to patrol the DSH site to deter any public protest.

The SLP believes the action of the Chastanet government was out of proportion and hasty in response to a posting which appeared on Facebook.

The Government did not send regular Police, to determine whether there was an illegal protest or sabotage, but instead sent a battalion of HEAVILY ARMED SSU officers.

This is clearly an attempt to frighten Saint Lucians who are in opposition to the project.

The SLP thinks it was a clear statement to Saint Lucians that any attempt to protest for the preservation of their heritage or patrimony will not be tolerated by the UWP government.

It will indeed be a sad day for Saint Lucia for the Government to order the SSU to put the people of Saint Lucia under the barrel of machine guns, if they dare go near the DSH site.

The Labour Party notes that these tactics of the UWP are not new, as we remember that the farmers who stood up for their rights were shot in cold blood by the SSU on the orders of the UWP.

The SLP had hoped that the UWP would have learnt from their past misdeeds and never again go down that road where Saint Lucian lives are threatened when protesting.

Once again the Police are being ordered to turn their guns on peaceful citizens of our country while the Allen Chastanet Administration has started selling our passports at an unacceptably low price to provide Saint Lucian citizenship to Chinese with an agreement that allows the proceeds from the sale to be kept overseas under the control of the DSH master developer.

There is something very wrong when investment, is to be forced down the throats of St. Lucians, at gunpoint.

The SLP calls on the Police to use their discretion and to not be used for political purposes under the guise of ensuring law and order. Citizens have a democratic right to protest and the Police must not be used to suppress that right.

The Labour Party is adamant that it will organise lawful and peaceful protest against DSH and assert the rights of citizens to oppose corruption and unlawful conduct by Government.

Anonymous, are a member of the United Workers Party? To make such a barbaric statement you must directly affiliated. The issue discussed is the abuse of the Police by Government, in an attempt to prevent “democratic” St Lucians from peacefully protesting against a bad Government decision. The UWP did stage a number of protest actions when they were in opposition. There was never an attempt to interrupt or sabotage their protests. Even the protest against fuel prices, which Allen Chastanet promised to freeze if he came into power was staged. Fuel cost has still risen over the past months. We have the right to protect our country but you sound in opposition of that right. Maybe you’re not even St Lucian at all. You still have a chance to get educated anyway…

Police were doing their job as property was threatened with destruction. When there is a bomb scare in Castries they also come out. When you SLP guys decided to destroy the banana industry in order to get the UWP out….you sent farmers to burn their own IBDs……you sent farmers to pelt police officers (who are fathers, sons, husbands with rocks). SLP will always advocate bitterness, division and violence to bring about their brand of champagne socialism a la animal farm. Living off the teat of the nation whilst training the masses to cut grass is their trademark.

i applaud you for your observations, the SLP is definitely the party of agitation and sowing of social discord….a government which has not even presented it first budget and these dudes acting like the PM is a dictator who has been in office for 25 years and doesn’t want to give up power. the dude was elected by the people 8 months ago to bring economic activity back to the country so let the dude follow his mandate.

@Veteran. The issue is not that police was sent out…But SSU? With machine guns? How come other “threats of destruction of PRIVATE property” have not received such attention? The Special Service Unit (SSU) is just that, a specially trained unit, St. Lucia’s version of SWAT or the only “military” branch (in addition to coast guard) we have. This is tantamount to a governor in the US calling out the National Guard. Was this really necessary ..and to protect PRIVATE PROPERTY? Now I hope the next time there is a chopping or a shooting they will be deployed to the hospitals and homes of the victims/witnesses etc to protect lives and property as well. In regards to the destruction of the banana industry either speak the truth, the whole truth and NOTHING but the truth or remain silent. Papa John was well aware that the contract/agreement to provide banana was coming to an end and secured HIMSELF. Wasn’t it George Odlum who repeatedly besought the then government to tell the farmers? Wasn’t it HIM who came out publicly and informed the farmers? My point to this is that more could have been done and should have been done to negotiate, extend, secure the contract for the country.

@Anonymous… almost a year in office and you feel that not presenting a budget is supposed to mean what exactly? That they haven’t had enough time? Really? ALSO, PROMISES and GUARANTEES were made that bananas would be going to France (via Martenique) BY the end of January… March ends next week. Please provide information/evidence of when and how much bananas have been shipped. ALSO, since YOU used the word “dictator” kindly reference the definition. You talk about “the dude” being elected to bring economic activity back to the country…so there is or was none? But you are right…activity does NOT NECESSARILY equate to PRODUCTIVITY, PROGRESS or ACCOMPLISHMENT. Please write an editorial, blog, post it here or anywhere for people like me (obviously you MUST be privy to some secret information that the other sensible St. Lucians are not) to read. Please outline the ECONOMIC BENEFIT (short and long term) that this project IN ITS CURRENT FORM remotely presents… Please and thanks..and your assignment are due by Friday… *bell ringing*

Notice how the white man-Evil Chastanet is using other blacks to suppress one another. It’s the divide and rule slave technical which has proven to work.
I don’t like the emotional ‘comebacks’ from my party. You shouldn’t even reply.
    Let your actions speak.
You can’t be emotional about garbage flowing out of the mouth of UWP pm who is a Non-National of Saint Lucia.

I believe the opposition, know they are in trouble if the UWP government succeeds in creating jobs and getting Saint Lucia on a right path. SLP will do all in their power to prevent any development and the success of the UWP government. Why can they just be honest is for that same reason the people voted you guys out, put Country before politics, it not about you guys red, yellow or green its about the people and our island Saint Lucia. I am sick of those guys and they associates who aren’t getting a fat salary any more just try to create unnecessary confusion in Saint Lucia. We can oppose the government if there are deals going on unaware to us and question it and the government has to furnish us with the relevant information and show us the long and short term benefits for the country. I agree we should be the biggest beneficiary in any deal. Presently we all know the problem is not the deal which was already in existence before this government but we knew nothing of until now. we have had several deals made on behalf of Saint Lucia without the people being aware; the Grynberg arrangement, Rochamel etc. where was the information and engaging of the people or dissemination of information under the SLP. I believe we need to put a stop to this kind of politics and let them politician know we are not fouls. If the colour blind SLP or UWP people want to remain stupid that’s them but Saint Lucian who put country before political party let’s teach them a lesson.

But SLP was the one who started that DSH and dolphin park thing undercover. At least the UWP saw the need to continue it. Its not even elections yet and the roads are being patched . look Corinth getting a total make over. The SLP just don’t want to see this government succeed.

SLP is in total desperation. The SSU was to protect the site and any of its contents in the face of allegations to destroy property. That is standard procedure in any country as a reaction to threats to property whether public or private.

No where was in reported that the SSU was there to prevent any peaceful demonstrations and surely they would not prevented people from assembling near the site.

Get real SLP and cut out the false propaganda and politricking. But it surely indicates how frightened the SLP are in the event DSH succeeds and they lose their power base in Vieux Fort and Laborie. That is what is giving them the diarrohea.

It is so obvious now that ex minister Jimmy Fletcher now opposing the dolphin park forgot his government had sanctioned it in 2013. That is what anger and desperation does to the coolness of a mind.

Wow,now I see how blinded by money people really are,for y’all to have the nerve to readily give up y’all country to foreign investors who surely will profit while y’all are being given scraps. Of course, the pm will also profit because for some strange reason is pushing hard to attain this ambiguous project. No one is against investment but not the way the agreement is detrimental to st.Lucia and us tax payers…
