Mandatory paternity tests coming?

National Security Minister, Hermangild Francis, has disclosed that the forensic laboratory which is now partially reopened, will eventually do paternity tests.

“We allow young people to get pregnant at an early age – fourteen, fifteen and we are never able to find the fathers of those children,” Francis told members of the Saint Lucia Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture on Wednesday.

However he said the current administration is trying to enhance the law to make it mandatory for persons who are suspected of having fathered children with those young persons to submit to a blood test.

“The lab would be able to do the paternity test and if that person is found to be the father, then we will pursue that individual,” the former Deputy Police Commissioner said.

Yes it is. Do you know that mothers can deny fathers access to their kids and there is nothing that can be done about it?

Seriously….. You claim $250 to be money. My child’s school fee per month is more. What about food, medical, bus fee, etc. Sad is the mentality of people on value of petty change towards kids….smdh

Good Intiative, i just hope there will not be selective prosecution for men who fathered kids with underage children.

I think that has more to do with prosecuting people who take advantage of young girls than address the issue of deadbeat dads. As it stands even if they find the guy and the lady chooses not to pursue for child support it means nothing.

I love the move, there are too many young children at 13, 14, 15 getting pregnant and we in society turn a blind eyes, it’s time these men who have sex with young children and get them pregnant pay for it

They news is about the under age young girls getting pregnant. Which is a crime to have sex with an under age child. Its not about the father feeding or taking care of the child. Thats a very good move. Too many grown ass men having babies with these lil children. N then the girl life most times jus goes down hill from there n the men enjoying their life

Hello people, this isn’t about money. This is about the blatant disregard for basic human decency. Men having sex with underage children should not just go to jail they should be BURIED UNDER the jail. What the hell.
Lock the sickos up and throw away the keys.
parents raise your children to make better choices, do your job as a parent.

Well they can use the swab too. That’s even faster. Swipe the sides of their mouth inside and bam. I hope too that results will be 99.99 percent. Remember my cousin had it done here and the result read ” it may or may not be. ” Paid money for crap. Up to now no one knows. Good move but at whose expense as DNA is very expensive to do..BRAVO

Long overdue. This 8 million facility has for too long (the past many years) been idling without taxpayers and the justice system getting the due for all the money that been injected into it.

Time for the lab and its equipment to be put into meaningful work. Its called productivity with efficiency.

In my opinion we should have mandatory DNA testing done on EVERY child who is born on our island. This would seriously curb on neglect/non active fathers who create menaces for society by simply saying “its not mine”. Of course infidelity would be exposed in some instances but this could be smoothly tied in with Child Services to ensure that those who are fathers play their part! That’s a small price to pay to make St Lucia a better place so….. I’m all for it!

Yes, this is a good idea…but at whose expense…the state? Taxpayers again? If fathers are not willing to make child support payments will they be willing to pay for paternity tests?

Love the positive statements here about protecting our children and prosecuting statutory rapists. While that seems the intent according to the Minister’s statements, it’s good to note concerns about deadbeat sperm donors as well. Those criticising mothers should think of the cost of preparing food, washing and ironing clothes, combing hair, going to PTA meetings, helping with homework, and all the other small tasks, for which mothers don’t get paid and to which fathers DON’T contribute! $250 cyah pay for that!
