Labor Department improves labor policy

Press Release:-The recent launch of an occupational safety policy provides guidance to the government, employers, and employees on ILO regulations.

Saint Lucia’s newly-launched Occupational Safety and Health Policy has placed the island one step closer to achieving its international obligation to the United Nations (UN).

The obligation is goal number eight of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which seeks to “transform the world through the promotion of inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment, and decent work for all.”

The minister with responsibility for Labor, Hon. Stephenson King, in a Labor Day address on May 1, said the Occupational Safety and Health Policy, is just one of the initiatives being pursued by the Government of Saint Lucia to safeguard the gains made by workers through the trade union movement.

“This action on our part signals one more step in fulfillment of the requirements of the Labor Act,” he said. “Let us continue our engagement in the process of reconstruction and the strengthening of the industrial environment here in Saint Lucia. My fellow workers, let us follow a plan of action that would promote smoother relationships, greater productivity, and satisfaction at the workplace. Undeniably, this endeavor is more than worthwhile.”

Saint Lucia’s Occupational Safety and Health Policy provides guidance to the government, employers, and employees on the International Labor Organization’s Occupational Safety and Health regulations. The regulations offer essential tools for implementing sound prevention, inspection, and reporting practices for maximum protection in the workplace.

The Occupational Safety and Health Policy was launched on April 28.
