Hilaire blasts PM’s budget

Castries South MP, Doctor Ernest Hilaire, has criticised Tuesday’s budget presentation by Prime Minister, Allen Chastanet, saying that the package has nothing in it for ordinary Saint Lucians.

“If anything the budget takes away a lot of what people in Saint Lucia depended on as safety nets,” Hilaire told reporters on Wednesday  afternoon as the opposition prepared to respond to the budget in the House of Assembly.

By way of example he mentioned the distress fund, laptops for children and the firing of National Initiative to Create Employment (NICE) employees.

Hilaire said the Prime Minister had mentioned a number of hotel projects, all of which started under the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP).

“It really makes you wonder exactly what new is in the budget,” the Castries South MP declared.

“What new in the budget we are seeing is the creation of more unemployment – the closure of RSL, the closing of the Fish Marketing Corporation, the closing of the Marketing Board and it leaves a lot to be seen as to exactly what this budget will deliver,” Hilaire stated.

Hilaire have you ever set foot inside the marketing board. Realise how depressing that place is? As an IT teacher, I can say that laptop programme is a waste of resources. Facebook and porn only. All schools have resource centres. Let them use computers there.

Anonymous May 11, 2017 at 7:13pm You are absolutely correct about the Laptop Programme. It’s a complete waste of scarce financial resources. A strong opposition party provides a viable option for voters. It makes the government work dutifully to stay in power. It’s for this reason that I welcome robust opposition. The SLP opposes everything the government proposes. Let’s be honest. It is nonsensical to think that there is nothing good for the country in the national budget. This is dishonest and divisive opposition. This is antiquated politics. This is insulting the intelligence of the people. This kind of opposition I can’t accept. When someone does something well, give them credit. When someone messes up, castigate him/her. Let’s be fair.

That all they can do! They screwed up badly and they know it. No vision or imagination in the heads of most of them. A this stage you have the nerve to bring up the Laptop Programme as an accomplishment…..smdh. Most see politics as a business only a means to advance personal agendas. They don’t go into politics to serve they go in to be served!

I don’t trust any polititian. But if he truly believes that what he is doing will benefit the country and not him or his friends, then I say go ahead. But only if it benefits St Lucia and not an individual or group of individuals.

Hey when your credit rating is junk status you have to offer more to get investment……the state shouldnt keep funding entities set up to make money but fail to do so year after year after year. Its alright to have a client state where money is thrown at ppl and entities but you must have the money to do so, we cant keep borrowing money at high interest rates to just throw away unproductively. I not willing to keep paying more and more taxes to fund largesse

Mate must be the biggest hypocritical politician in st.Lucia ..this guy does not care for the little man . all he cares about is his ego and pocket . trust me st.Lucian’s this is a man that never relates to poor people ,because when his government was in power he never challenge a thing where Kenny orders are concern..we all know Kenny is your teacher and for sure st.Lucia doesn’t need a Kenny 2.0

One of the places closed could have hardly paid salaries. And that was under the SLP.
Hilaire maybe you should check the financials of some of these places especially under SLP’s tenure and come back and talk when you ready. You will probably support the closure.

This present government was given the mandate by the people of St Lucia to manage the affairs of state from June 7th 2016 to sometime in 2021.
It appears that the SLP cannot come to terms with this and are hell bent on trying everything to hinder the policies and programmes of the duly elected government. I am advising the opposition to be still and allow the government to carry out their duties and I am also calling on the government to govern the country and stop allowing yourselves to be side tracked by people who were not given the authority to rule. Finally I am calling on the primeminister and minsister of finance to go to your constituency in micoud south and fix the roads there. People are criying out victimization can you explain to me MR PM how the hell MOUSA JNBAPTISTE
