UWP concerned about recent spate of gun violence

The  ruling United Workers Party (UWP) has expressed concern about a recent spate of gun violence over the past few months and especially in the  last week.

A party statement  noted that a total of 5 incidents occurred in and around the outskirts of Castries in the last week.

The UWP expressed condolences to the family and friends of those who have lost loved ones and wished those who were injured a speedy recovery.

The party  stated that it supports government efforts to fight crime and is  encouraged by the efforts of the current administration to fulfill the plans to fight crime as outlined in the UWP manifesto.

“As mentioned in the budget address presented by our Political Leader and Prime Minister Hon. Allen Chastanet, government will be moving swiftly to introduce modern technology as one if its chief weapons to fight against crimes,” the UWP statement said.

According to the ruling party statement, the introduction of  a Closed Circuit Television [CCTV] monitoring system will be pivotal in addressing the crime problem plaguing the nation, particularly in areas prone to crime.

It observed that partnership with the private sector in regard to the supply and maintenance of cameras will also be used for crime fighting strategies.

The  UWP statement said the reopening of the Forensic Science Laboratory will assist the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force  (RSLPF) in crime fighting, as will the increase in resources by training recruits and providing additional vehicles and other much needed equipment.

“The UWP stands with the government in committing to ensuring that officers are kept abreast of new and advanced crime-fighting techniques,” the statement observed.

The ruling party has urged citizens to find ways to deal with conflicts by effective communication and resolving issues without the use of force.

“We should build communities where we respect and help each other rather than fear one another. We need to be more of a tolerant society where we can live together as one in peace and unity. This requires a strengthened effort and synergy by all Saint Lucians as it is a societal issue so this scourge can be completely addressed.” the UWP asserted.

The party called on society, communities and  every sector of this country’s community, inter-faithful groups and businesses to work together to tackle the social ills.

Community policing is key in fighting crime. Because the police cannot be everywhere all the time, they need tips and evidence from the public to solve many unlawful incidents. Police should intermingle with the people of the communities they serve. This is to get to know the people and the people to get to know them on a personal level. This is also to engender trust. It will take the collective efforts of the entire country to reduce criminal activities to a very low level. Crime is everybody’s business. He who does not prevent a crime when he can, encourages it.
