The National Security Minister, Hermangild Francis says he would be happy to meet with members of the Police Welfare Association (PWA).
Senator Francis acknowledged that there are “certain things that they need to speak to me about.”
Among the matters of concern to the PWA is the extended suspension of officers who are under investigation.
The Association said some officers have been on prolonged suspension, running up to eight years in some instances.
It said the treatment is similar to being on remand.
Senator Francis agrees that prolonged suspension of police officers is a matter that needs a resolution.
“It’s not fair for a police officer to be accused of an offense, investigated and it takes years before it comes to a (resolution). So I agree with them that they need to have specific timeframes in dealing with disciplinary matters with police officers,” Francis said.
Senator Francis believes that speedy resolution of police disciplinary matters will lead to increased discipline among police officers.
The Police Welfare Association President, Travis Chicot recently revealed that ten police officers are currently on suspension, all of whom are police constables or special police constables.
