PRESS RELEASE:-The Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA) says that it sees the concessions granted to Sandals as a good thing for the industry.
During her speech at the recent Sandals Barbados prestige awards Mrs. Roseanne Myers, chairperson of the BHTA made the declaration in front of the hotels top performers and management.
“I want to make the point that you would have heard, and team members would have heard, a lot of discussion on the whole question of concessions, what we should get and what Sandals got; it was really never about the Sandals brand, it was really a discussion about fairness that we were having with the Government.
But we do welcome the Sandals brand and we do recognise that it is extremely important for us to embrace Sandals,” she said.
The BHTA official said the island’s tourism product has done reasonably well in spite of the worrisome economic challenges facing the country. But she said there is no room for complacency.
“If you are looking at the big picture for destination Barbados, you have to look at what is happening in our source markets . . . and what is it we as individual businesses can do to weather those storms,” she said.
“When we look at the big picture, you have to say what can the individual companies do and then what can I as the individual working on a property like Sandals do?
“You have a lot to offer in terms of what you can show people is possible and . . . once we can get together we can build this industry well beyond what it is today in spite of the challenges that we are seeing because we have a very good record and reputation in the market,” she added.
