Former RSL General Manager condemns planned station shutdown

A former General Manager of Radio St Lucia has accused the government of “putting profits over people” in its decision to shut down the radio station and a number of other state-owned entities.

Winston Springer made the statement at a news conference Wednesday at the St Lucia Labour Party Headquarters on Jeremie Street, Castries.

He said the Allen Chastanet administration was acting without consideration to the immediate effects the closures would have on families and the unemployment situation.

He said it was a “colossal mistake” putting the blame on “one man’s financial privileged position.”

Mr. Springer said the government, by its actions, appeared to be going along with a recommendation from the Caribbean Development Bank.

However, he pointed to a number of other Caribbean countries that have rejected those same recommendations to shut down state agencies.

“Why have the government of St Lucia chosen to go down this path when virtually all other governments have rejected similar advice from both the CDB and those who have signed on to the IMF structural adjustment programs?” Springer asked.

He added that Radio St Lucia has continually had its operations saddled by political interference, with employees who fail to tow the political line being unable to practice their professions freely.

Why now Mr Springer? Why now? For months the story of the fate of RSL has been circulating – why is it now you’re speaking out? Even when YOU were the Manager of the radio station, it had its woes. What did you do to alleviate it? What did you do bring back the radio station to its “Glory Days”? So, not now, Mr Springer, not now.

Chastanet has no clue when it comes to anything. He has no vision, cannot conceptualise any other than destroy.
The only reason why he wanted dbyo shut down RSL is because of Shelton Daniel. What’s about about The Audio archives? Charts now is coo coo. The guy is Nuts. I have to blame those who voted him into office. You got what you all deserve.

It must be over 20 years I have not listen to RSL. The last I can recall of RSL was JCs Radio Bingo so it must be over 20 years.

You make no sense. I’m sorry but what you’re saying is let’s continue being a broke third world country as long as we ignore the fact that we’re broke and wasting money then it’s fine.

Also: since it was mentioned, this came from an SLP hack speaking at an SLP event, not necessarily concerned for people himself or speaking in the capacity of a former manager. He’s the cause of the issue that is now trying to be cleaned up and instead of owning up to it he rather say it’s a government issue

Springs has just woken up to hear that his party lost 11-6. What does he do? Bitter and in denial he jumps into action speaking nonsense and out of turn, trying to show loyalty and impress Kenny .

Here are some alternatives which are farrrrr better (ask our former PM): Keep all those entities and their employees and just take 5% from every civil servant’s salary and downsize the number of civil servant.
