With the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane season now officially underway, the National Emergency Management Organization is urging St Lucians to prepare for the worst case scenario.
NEMO Director Velda Joseph says natural disasters could be very unpredictable and St Lucians must ensure they are prepared at all times.
“You are never able to accurately predict how much rain you going to get from a trough or how much wind you are going to get from a hurricane,” Joseph said. “So the key is to make sure that at the household level, at the community level that you exercise that level of preparedness.”
Forecasters have predicted an above normal hurricane season this year with anywhere from 11 to 17 named tropical storms, including a number of hurricanes.
Ms. Joseph said St Lucians should not wait until the hurricane season to engage in hurricane preparedness activities.
She urged residents to put measures in place that would mitigate against disasters and allow for a minimization of the impact of events like a storm or hurricane.
