Ugandans hail inclusion of boda boda in Oxford Dictionary 9th edition of the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary, launched since 2015, has been hailed by Ugandans on social media in 2017 for one word – boda boda.

The local word used widely in East Africa represents the popular motorcycle taxis used in almost every part of Uganda.

The dictionary defines boda boda – which is one of the 900 newly introduced words – as “a type of motorcycle or bicycle with a space for a passenger or for carrying goods, often used as a taxi”.

It further added a local example: “boys on boda bodas riding on Kampala’s streets”.

These appealed to Ugandans who tweeted the portion in the printed edition that showed the word and its definition.
