A total of 256 contraband items were seized during an operation at the Bordelais Correctional Facility (BCF) on Saturday, June 3, 2017.
The contraband was seized during Operation Search Seizure Secure 2017.
It wasconducted by 127 persons including BCF personnel, members of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force and one volunteer from Spartan University, a BCF statement said.
Among the items that were confiscated were 33 cell-made weapons, 44 portions of cannabis, 34 cigarette lighters, 66 disposable shaver blades, 23 mobile telephones and 25 mobile telephone chargers.
The haul also included 10 mobile telephone batteries, a chisel and a staple gun.
According to the BCF, the aim of the operation was to mitigate against any threat to staff, provide a safe and secure environment, ensure that there are no forms of tools or contraband that can facilitate an escape and achieve the mandate of the Correctional Services Act of 2008.
“This task was undeniably tedious, as officers had to be creative in detecting the various methods of concealment the inmates used,” the BCF statement observed.
The statement said that having been ‘significantly successful’ with Operation Search Seizure Secure 2017, the Bordelais Correctional Facility will employ appropriate measures towards maintaining the sterility of the environment.
It observed that this would contribute to national security.
