World Environment Day observed yesterday

GIS:-Sustainable Development Department encourages activity-based commemoration.

World Environment Day was observed on June 5 under the theme “Connecting People to Nature.”

World Environment Day was designated 43 years ago by the United Nations, as a means to encourage people throughout the world to care for the environment, and raise awareness on a number of issues including climate change, biodiversity, marine pollution, wildlife protection and sustainable consumption.

In commemoration, Saint Lucia’s Department of Sustainable Development is encouraging the public to make a special effort to honour the observance by implementing activities that will indicate their personal commitment to protecting the environment. Simple activities that can be pursued in support of this year’s theme “Connecting People to Nature” include posting photos of environmentally conscious activities with the hashtag #worldenvironmentday2017, visiting the beach, a river, or planning a nature walk with family and friends.

This year, the Department of Sustainable Development will be connecting the youth to nature hrough school and community outreach activities.
