Left-handed people are better at maths than righties, study suggests

(Telegraph) -Left-handed people may have been considered inferior historically, but a new study suggests they are actually smarter in some ways than right-h

Researchers at IFL Science have studied the link between left-handedness and mathematical skill, carrying out a series of experiments on 2,300 students in primary and secondary education.

To assesses handedness, the students were all asked to complete a questionnaire – the Edinburgh inventory – which asked them which hand they preferred to use for tasks such as writing, drawing and throwing.

Left-handers outperformed the others when the tasks involved difficult problem-solving, such as associating mathematical functions to a given set of data, the study found.

There was no difference between the two groups of people when it came to simple arithmetic.

Furthermore,  the students who said they preferred to use their right hand for all items on the handedness test fared less well in all the experiments compared to moderate right-handers and left-handers.

The link can be partly explained by the fact left-handers generally have a more developed right side of the brain.

However, IFL Science did note that only one third of people with a more developed right side of the brain are left-handed, so there are lots of right-handed people with a similar brain function.

Just 10 per cent of the world’s population is left-handed, yet four of America’s last six Presidents have been left-handed: Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, George H. W. Bush, and Ronald Reagan. Donald Trump and George W Bush are right handed.

Of course, left-handed people have also been considered sinister and evil – the Latin for left hand in “sinestra” – so they could also be evil geniuses.

I beg to differ I am left handed and I suck at mathematics in fact I perform much better in reading.
