Pierre wins judgement in libel case

Castries East MP, Philip J. Pierre, has won judgement in  two separate libel cases.

The first case named journalist, Guy Ellis, the Mayers Printing Company Limited and the Mirror Publishing Company Limited as defendants.

Journalist, David Vitalis, Guy Mayers, who is currently Saint Lucia’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, the Mayers Printing Company Limited and Mirror Publishing Company Limited  were named as defendants in the second matter.

Justice Godfrey Smith awarded Pierre  a total of $40,000 in damages, including aggravated damages.

Pierre, who is currently leader of the opposition, had sued Guy Ellis – then Editor at the Mirror Newspaper, the Mayers Printing Company Limited and the Mirror Publishing Company Limited, which are both owned by Guy Mayers, over the publication of a letter to the editor.

The letter, entitled “Mr. Pierre’s  Great Wall”, was published on April 15, 2011.

Pierre claimed that the clear intent of the letter was to depict him as a corrupt, selfish representative who put his personal needs above those of his constituents.

The second libel suit which was heard jointly with the first, arose from the fact that the first claim had been struck out on January 13, 2014 for want of prosecution.

David Vitalis was then Editor of the Mirror which published an article on January 13, 2014 entitled “Libel Case Struck Out.”

However the case was eventually reinstated with judgement being handed down this week.

The judgment,  obtained by the Times, said the second article repeated the allegations against Pierre contained in the first one, along with excerpts of comments from interviews with Guy Mayers and Guy Ellis.

According to the judgement, the defendants did not seek any comment from the claimant.

Guy Mayers was Pierre’s political opponent who had lost the previous general election to Pierre in December 2006 but had been appointed as a Senator and a Cabinet Minister in the United Workers Party (UWP) administration.

Peter Foster, QC and Sahleen Charles appeared on Pierre’s behalf while Leslie Prospere and Vilan Edward appeared on behalf of the defendants.

The UWP always wants to label others on a negative light as them. So by doing, it will cover up all their corrupt practices.
You can’t fool the people, UWP.

The important thing is Guy Mayers is shown for what he is! Most importantly the ruling shows you for what you are: gullible and simplistic to have believed this sinful bunch known as UWP. Stop listening to your heart mate. Let your mind be your guide.

Yes Pierre as minister there was no reason for a wall to be built to protect your property. Why u did not put the money towards improving road safety and put a piece of vehicular guard rails along Bocage, Bagatelle or Entrepot. Funny how all u say all u love the people and hv an opportunity to protect them and don’t. We lucians so blinded by red and yellow it’s ashame. Anyways when I consider u were minister of infrastructure and could not even do a piece of rehab to Marchand Main Road it says a lot. I know Marchand ppl will blast me and the party hacks too. But look at Marchand. Has there been any improvement to lives in Marchand or a reduction in unemployment in that area or reduction in crime. After over 20 years. SMH. I guess Marchand ppl love their road condition and their lives so who am I.
