Former Saint Lucia Prime Minister, Doctor Kenny Anthony, has called for the creation of a new category of crime in Saint Lucia.
“I believe now that we should have a special category of crime in politics – we should call it political fraud,” Anthony told a meeting last night of the opposition Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) on the Castries market steps.
He asserted that when a political party misleads the electorate, they should be charged with political fraud.
The former SLP leader made the comments while asserting that the ruling United Workers Party (UWP) has misled the people of Saint Lucia who fell for the party’s promises.
“That is why I have no hesitation in saying to you loud and clear that this is a government that has committed political fraud on the people of Saint Lucia,” Anthony declared.
While calling attention to a number of initiatives that have been scrapped by the administration of Prime Minister, Allen Chastanet, Anthony told his audience that Chastanet, in his private occupations, was a dismal failure.
“Even Butch Stewart who even today uses him for his own purposes, decided to rid himself of Allen Chastanet,” the former PM said.
He referred to the economy about which the SLP has been warning the government.
“There is something that is happening with your reputation as a country and I am the first to tell you that some of those problems had to do with the very difficult years that we were in office, when there is one satisfaction I will get when I finally make my departure – it is dear to me,” the former Prime Minister stated.
“I want to go down as a Prime Minister who never took Saint Lucia to the IMF,” Anthony declared.
He noted that Saint Lucians were promised that Value Added Tax (VAT) would be reduced and removed.
“They bring down VAT for you by 2.5 percent – why is it if they bring down VAT for you by 2.5 percent, the price of things in the supermarket has gone up? ” Anthony said.
He asserted that the ordinary people were not benefitting from the reduction in VAT.
