A local clergyman has blamed family breakdown for social problems currently being experienced in Saint Lucia, including crime.
Peter Fevrier is a Deacon with the Family and Life Secretariat of the Roman Catholic Church.
“It is our belief in church that once the family is not strong a number of things will fall apart in the society,” the clergyman stated.
Fevrier observed that the family is the nucleus and bedrock of the society.
“If we choose to neglect the family, the formation of children, the faith and the belief in God, then automatically all things will fall apart,” the Assistant Administrator of the Family and Life Secretariat explained.
He said what is currently being witnessed in Saint Lucia is a culture of crime, hate and death.
Fevrier asserted that it may be correct to assume that the cause is the degradation of the status of family life in general and the formation of the youth.
The Catholic official observed that it has been seven years since the establishment of the Family and Life Secretariat.
He disclosed that the Secretariat has done over 300 presentations with discussions at various levels on the matter of family life.
“We have written over 70 articles – published articles on the matter of family life, hoping that our nation would have taken family life more seriously and unless we go back to that reality – making sure that families are strong, making sure that parents are taking care of their children and investing time in ensuring that the children get the right foundation, ensuring also that the belief in God, the respect for God, love for God is at the nucleus of their existence, we will continue to suffer the way we are suffering,” the Fevrier declared.
