Family breakdown blamed for social problems

A local clergyman has blamed family breakdown for social problems currently being experienced in Saint Lucia, including crime.

Peter Fevrier is a Deacon with the Family and Life Secretariat of the Roman Catholic Church.

“It is our belief in church that once the family is not strong a number of things will fall apart in the society,” the clergyman stated.

Fevrier observed that the family is the nucleus and bedrock of the society.

“If we choose to neglect the family, the formation of children, the faith and the belief in God, then automatically all things will fall apart,” the Assistant Administrator of the Family and Life Secretariat explained.

He said what is currently being witnessed in Saint Lucia is a culture of crime, hate and death.

Fevrier asserted that it may be correct to assume that the cause is the degradation of the status of family life in general and the formation of the youth.

The Catholic official observed that it has been seven years since the establishment of the Family and Life Secretariat.

He disclosed that the Secretariat has done over 300 presentations with discussions at various levels on the matter of family life.

“We have written over 70 articles – published articles on the matter of family life, hoping that our nation would have taken family life more seriously and unless we go back to that reality – making sure that families are strong, making sure that parents are taking care of their children and investing time in ensuring that the children get the right foundation, ensuring also that the belief in God, the respect for God, love for God is at the nucleus of their existence, we will continue to suffer the way we are suffering,” the Fevrier declared.

concerned person please make intelligent statements, we can all agree that yes religion does play a part in making society a better place. But for you to say that people moving away from the catholic church and forming their own religions was the cause of the social plight and troubles we are seeing is one of the most most unintelligent things i have ever heard.
Do some research into the history of the formation of religions which branch out of the catholic church and why it happened. Learn about the “”Protestant Reformation”” then speak.
You are trying to say that Catholicism is the only religion to make society better. Really.
So other denominations don’t produce upstanding citizens and well rounded families
please try to make intelligent statements in this forum

Totally agree. If only God’s people who are in the Catholic Church would learn the history of what that church stands for and its role in prophetic events, they would leave and never look back. The offshoots of this church (namely all Sunday keeping denominations) would also do well to follow suit. Catholicism is merely a religion founded on man made traditions and precepts and not the unerring and infallible word of God. The onus now is on the members of God’s last day remnant to live lives that effectively represent the character of Christ, so that we can call people out of this spiritual darkness into the marvelous light of God’s truth!

What about the breakdown in church?
Where priest pray on little boys and little girls.
Wouldn’t that cause a breakdown in society?

The Pope protecting his number 3 for decades of child abuse in Australia. Vile abuse by the Catholic church in Ireland last century supported by the Irish government, I could go on for pages.
Yeah man that’s a wonderful example.

There is a multiplicity of reasons for the rampant social ills of today. There are too many dysfunctional families. Too many politicians and adults display bad behavior in public. Example set, example follow. The church has become an irrelevant social club. Lots of shouting and screaming, little or no action. Material things give us value and social status. Love, politeness, kindness, honesty and other virtues are now frowned upon from a large section of the community. Cursing someone publicly makes you strong in the eyes of the public. Correcting someone’s bad behavior , you are vociferously berated. We need more love and respect for one another.

I’m not a catholic but he has spoken well. Study the root and not the fruit. Societal issues will always trace back to the family. Especially the role of fathers. Men are disappearing. It is an insidious plan of Satan.

Crime exists even in socities where there are no organized religions, so at the end of the day it boils down to personal accountability, poverty, lack of proper parenting, lack of education and opportunity. The U.S. has three or four churches on every street corner and still that is not A deterrent for criminal activity. So this is not A novel phenomenon in St Lucia it exists everywhere. At the end of the day even if angels came down from heaven, people will still commit crimes, it is an inherent part of some peoples nature.Did’nt the good book speak about if A person hates another for no reason the same has already committed murder. So do the math and think of the number of people who would fall in that category and just maybe we would get A better understanding of the issue.

Most of the reasons are well said.May I add an observation. It has a religious attachment. I St.Lucia or days gone by the Catholic church governed schools and communities. The Catholicpriest were the counsellors J.P ect.All Catholic teachers were were confirmed by the priest and had to be in good standing in the community. Common law unions was not accepted by the church and if any one had to be active in any church activity or employment this person had to conform to churches doctrine. Therefore the church had a significant impact on the community and it’s people.Sincs government has taken over from church and principles of doing business has changed then the quality of morality has declined fast and furious. The church is more worldly than the world itself. The leaders of the church are more into the world the flesh and the devil. At this crucial juncture each of us must use the word pray forun standing of the word and to act upon the word which which is the guide line for good living. Each of us must look up to Jesus Christ. The way out of this social mess is to retrieve our steps backwards and to do what worked well for us as a small nation.

Though it’s obvious that morals are at rock bottom the world over, this article from a cleric is somewhat superficial and naïve.
Humans receive their exemplars from the leaders of their society, that is, from their churches, schools, politicians; and in particular, right now, the international and thoroughly materialistic-driven media that spews forth and brainwashes humanity with nothing but valueless garbage: its main objective being to sell ‘things’ and promulgate amoral trivia while keeping everyone distracted, ignorant, and confused about everything by means of an endless proliferation of lies. THIS is the reason for our moral dilemma and decadence: a total lack of genuine moral leadership. Evidently, no one wants to take on that much needed responsibility.
Since the end of the last two hasty world wars, Europe handed over its Western leadership to America’s consumer-based materialism and military-dominance. Thus wealth, greed (of all kinds), and might-have-become-right! In the past, religion, parents, and teachers were able to successfully establish some values within the minds of our children; however, nowadays, movies, televisions, and computers have taken over that role. Media has become their constant companions and role models – 24/7; apparently, it has become the new god, parent, and teacher. THIS is the mail problem responsible for our decadent world right now. THIS is the problem we must face and solve – and as soon as possible! Otherwise . . . ???
