Doctor Stephen King’s contract terminated

The government of Saint Lucia has terminated Doctor Stephen King’s three-year contract to look at the transformation of the local health sector, reliable sources have told the Times.

According to the sources, Doctor King’s assignment was to recommend ways to ‘move the health sector to a more modern and effective place.’

But the Times has been informed that the former Chief Medical Officer’s contract, signed in June last year, was terminated on May 31, 2017.

“The government decided to terminate the contract because they have enough information and can do it on their own,” one official explained.

“It was a policy decision,” the official told the Times.

Doctor King is reportedly about to produce a final exit report before the contract officially expires at the end of this month.

I agree this article is a bit confusing or probably not well written.
Anyway. …Mr king was sitting doing what for this period of time? ? Having the name..Stephen King with no new ideas is pointless.
I haven’t seen anything new or different done. It’s the same old same old.
I will continue to say that health is given least priority.
Unless persons who are not politically motivated and genuinely have a passion for improving health care in St Lucia are placed in these positions..then nI thing different will a hapen.

Let us take our time to analyze this. Await developments on this subject which is of immense importance to the well being of St Lucian of all walks of life.
We have to rely on the next steps taken by our Minister in the appropriate Ministry. She is an intelligent lady and ad citizens we should support or offer suggestions/complaints/and feasible ideas to the Ministry for action.
St Lucian can help themselves sometimes and not just sit back, take or receive, solicit or demand all the time. Stand up, give back to your country, and get involved in a process as essential to the health if the nation
There is work to be done. Let cool heads and hearts prevail and do not kill it at the door.

I believe our Minister of Health to be clear on her mandate and has the business at hand in a firm grip. We should wait before passing any judgement on strategic decisions, hopefully there will be a fulfilling surprise. We have
waited for advancement in the area of healthcare on the island. We do not have so much time left. Let’s us move on with it and see what follows this decision.

This is a classic example of how little St Lucians think of their own capability. I am not trained in health administration but first principles tell me that there are 2 main parts: (1) Diagnosis and (2) Treatment… Of course, as the region does little medical research, there will always be a need to import clinical knowledge… But, the administration of both the aforementioned parts is classic maths, and organisation… however, the latter “organisation” is highly driven by the country’s cultural context… So, in that light, one has to conclude there is no need to import guidance on that front. The former “maths” is about queuing theory and managing waiting times… there are many world class mathematicians in the region, so again no need to import guidance… St Lucians must develop confidence in their own abilities… by importing guidance there is a high probability that St Lucia would incur a high cost and most probably be railroaded into some notion of “best practice”, which on the surface, sounds good, until one realises that “best practice” is greatly dependent on context, and what works optimally in Mexico, will certainly not be optimal in St Lucia. I believe that there are good bright people in St Lucia who are capable of designing a system from the ground up. One that is perfect for St Lucians and its culture. Moreover, in the process of developing it, St Lucians may even invent a new health administration system that it can export… St Lucia and the Caribbean need to stop thinking that more developed countries have the answers… I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt, they don’t! To succeed, what is needed from St Lucians are pragmatism, empathy and due process…

So basically, the government of the day has made a policy decision to fire Doctor King a staunch supporter of the labour party. Dr. King basically is a charlatan, just like all the other labour party charlatans. Wolf in Sheeps Clothing. He miraculously becomes active socially every time labour is out of power. To Dr. King, its all about his bottom line….not your bottom Line. Why is he even still taking work from the public sector? It should be either pro-bono or go work for your private enterprises. Allow other people to eat. Stupid labour people…

His name and pigmentation have given him many advantages in this confused society. Even an island scholarship when his he obviously did not need it. Thre is something called white liberal guilt and he suffers from it. Guilt is what’s likely behind the goody two shoe facade. He knows he’s been unfairly privileged.
Also, a 3 years contract to do what? Such contracts are seldom more than a year in duration. Did he write his own terms of reference? Look like greed is also a factor.

If you can prove to me that Dr king did earn his schoalaship on the merit of hard work then you have a point otherwise stop peddling rubbish. Same time the filth coming from you is not surprising for you sound like one of those who is not comfortable unless you are being maltreated. I’m in a good mind to sanction you to a permanent life in the clutches of this merciless and clueless lot called the UWP government. I won’t bother to specify the examples of their works indicating they are not goody two shoes as you called king. But I know no St Lucian is blind and immune to the brutal effects of the works of those you favour over the goody two shoes.

It is sickening reading some comments. They are more concerned with assassinating the man’s character than the relevant issues surrounding the case. I would like one of them to tell me what did he do that he could have done better. Some official said the government can do the job mandated to Dr king on its own. Well we all shall see. In the meantime while the most cynical cry vindictive and wait to see who will replace him it would be proper to pay the man off. Well all chastanet has a problem working with anyone who is not his “yes” man.

Don’t think comment questioned Dr. King’s academic merit. In most places awarding a scholarship is not only based on academics but also financial neediness. What’s a point of awarding a scholarship to persons who can afford it anyway when we live in a poor country with so much need? Some poor but the slightly less academically “gifted” person is deprived and opportunity when that happens. It doesn’t make sense!

No one here should be surprised. People … We are still in St. Lucia! That is a Lucian standard. Why is this news? With all the people sent home over the past year from permanent positions, what makes his contract sacrosanct? Dr. King has made his contribution to the public health sector and at the same time the private sector and his personal business interests.

Dr. King your expertise is no longer needed, let go of entitlement and go in peace like a professional.

Why is it such a problem if the government decides that there is not reason for someone to continue at a particular post? I am also if the opinion that many of the complainants weren’t even aware of that responsibility given to Dr. King. Let us now leave it to the government to make our country thrive again, and stop calling out for god to put a hand when there nothing that negatively affect any of you. Dr King is a General Practitioner and i’m sure he will survive and if he cares for his country he will make his contribution and advise on health care without necessarily having a contract and one more paycheck.

I am simply saying, let us not make it seem like he is the only one who can help us advance healthcare. we have lots of young doctors coming in with worldwide experience. He is just another high paid consultant and of course, maybe there were no real results. I agree with the gov’t on this one.

    October 5, 2017 at 7:31 am

How about the ‘government’ embarking on health drives and encourage healthy eating, working, sleeping and exercise lifestyles… more self-help social workers in the communities………… MORE TAKING CONTROL OF YOUR SELF, OR PAYING THE PRICE. THEN we would have less talk, bother and expense with hospitals, CMO’s, consultants and the likes. Just thinking out loud, because too many people are behaving like baby birds in a nest, squawking and screaming for the mother to bring them their worms. And you see it all the time… grown adults looking to live a life of ease. Look at us…. grazing at all fast food outlets, partying EVERY weekend, and sometimes during the week…guzzling unlimited amounts of alcohol and stimulants….. so we can live good and feel nice, burning the candles at both ends. Then we run out of money and blame the government… then (of course) we get sick and someone has to heal us. Really!?
