Jamaica: Former politician shot dead by police

Jamaica Observer:-SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — The commercial centre of this south central town was in uproar Monday afternoon after well-known businessman and former politician Warrenton Barham allegedly shot dead a young woman and was in turn shot dead by police.

People at the scene named the young woman as Lotoya Williamson, 24, originally from Knoxwood, St Elizabeth and resident at Whitehouse in eastern Westmoreland.

It was alleged that about 4:00 pm Barham, 70, who was involved in a confrontation with Williamson, pulled his licensed firearm and shot her. She died on the spot.

A police officer who was in the vicinity is said to have challenged Barham and ended up firing shots, killing him.

The incident happened in front of the Table Top Restaurant which Barham and his wife operated in a busy plaza at the centre of Santa Cruz.

A man told the Jamaica Observer he was in a nearby bar when he heard gunshots and ran outside just in time to see Barham with a gun in his hand being shot in the face by a police officer.

Hundreds of people converged on the scene which was speedily cordoned off by police investigators.

Barham contested the Siloah Division for the Jamaica Labour Party in 2007 and again in 2012. He lost both times to the People’s National Party’s Audie Myers.
