Special Needs Children & Families Further Marginalized?

PRESS RELEASE:-Castries, Saint Lucia – Wednesday, August 2, 2017: Raise Your Voice Saint Lucia Inc.

We understand the program for the Assessment of Special Needs Children has been terminated and/or discontinued by the Ministry of Health & Wellness.

This special needs assessment was done by a trained Medical & Pediatric Professional contracted by the Government of St. Lucia through the Ministry of Health and Wellness. The evaluation is mandatory for each child who may display issues such as Health, Vision, Social and Emotional Development Challenges, Learning Disability, Poor Academic Performance, Underdeveloped Communication and Motor skills, etc.

The number of children on the waiting list for this program may well be in the hundreds, while there is a private entity offering the same services, many families cannot afford the fees as they must remain with their special needs child at all times, as some children require round the clock care or cannot attend school without the assessment report.

We, therefore call on the Hon. Allen Chastanet, Prime Minister & Minister for Finance, Sen. Mary Isaac, Minister for Health and Wellness, Hon. Dr. Gale T. C. Rigobert, Minister for Education and Hon. Lenard Montoute, Minister for Equity, Social Justice and Empowerment, to reinstate this program, for the benefit of poor struggling mothers at the earliest.

The termination of this program further marginalizes special needs children, specifically those whose parents are poor, underprivileged, unemployed, underemployed, rural and struggling.

Politicians talk a lot of crap about integrating differently abled persons into society and have now discontinued assessments so that the children can be educated. The CDGC is doing a wonderful job with their limited capacity. I hope that the Government will increase the support to them to enable them to do more.

If the contents of the above article are correct then Lucians are doomed. A caring government would always try its hardest to cater for its most vulnerable citizens . Children with special needs fall in this category. One’s soul has to be overly dark to deprive these needy children and parents the assistance they so require. This is proof that the government has a disdain for poor people. People, we deserve better from our elected officials. Lets all call, write or speak directly to our representatives and let them know in no uncertain term that this is abominable. An assault on the most susceptible in our communities is an assault on all of us. Government cannot solve all our problems but they must give support to the least among us, our most vulnerable children, the physically and mentally impaired.

people will believe what they want to believe whether it is true or false. The reality is would a government in the view of everyone and the world denounce children, even disable children to get medical services. The lies that were created were dismissed. why are st.lucians so gullible. these slp people are hard and work and using innocent people in their games. They refuse to realize that they have four more years to campaign. Idiots they are . they should be ashamed of themselves.
