Five killed after vehicle plunges over cliff in Dominica

A vehicle ran off the road and plunged over a cliff in Dominica Sunday morning, killing all five people on board, reports say.

The accident reportedly occurred around 7 o’clock in Vieille Case, in the northern part of Dominica.

Reports say the vehicle fell into the sea after running over the cliff. All the victims are reported to be men.

The circumstances surrounding the accident was not immediately clear.

Photographs from the scene show debris in the waters below a tall mountain, with onlookers standing on a side.

The area where the accident occurred is represented in parliament by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, reports Dominica News Online.

Prime Minister Skerrit offered his condolences and said he spoke to one of the victims the night before.

“Just last evening I spent a considerable amount of time with one of the young men as we met with the young people from my constituency. In fact, he gave the welcome address at the forum. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the deceased. We all share in the pain and suffering. For me personally, it can’t get closer,” Skerrit said.

CORRECTION: You need to edit out the first sentence, which says the accident occurred in Roseau.

So sad this one is another reminder of how we must be so vigilant and careful. What happened to the driver,my condolences go out to these families.7am in the morning sun is up,i cannot believe that the driver could not see.Maybe Rum was a factor,or even speed.People respect the road,it takes lives and it never finish.

You are asking what is wrong with the driver? He is dead! “7am in the morning, sun is up” and bright too. Don’t you think maybe the glare of the sun could have thrown him off? You can’t always be so quick to blame alcohol. If he was just at a function giving the “welcome address” the night before maybe he was to attend another function or work the morning. The point is, you are not the medical examiner, nor are u the police investigator, not even sure u saw him before the accident. Therefore, just send your condolences and stop speculating. Please and thanks!

Ppl. Stop assuming. We had a similar case a few years ago. The Morne Sion tragedy. Where 19 persons were perished. Only 17 were found. Have we forgotten? The only difference to this one it occurred in the day. Why are we so judgemental. Leave judgement for God.

Sharon purposely didnot mention nechanical problem.once I went to change my brakes in a reputable garage and when I left the brakes was making a funny sound only to realize that the guy forgot to put something .it’s not only rum and racing which causes accidents.other things beyond your control can happen.sharon try to have an open mind

DID the road have crash barriers/guardrails to reduce the chance of this happening?

“it was reported to the police that about 7:00 a.m, motor vehicle registration number PQ978 owned and at the time driven by Marcellin drove off the road through guard rails and descended over a cliff about 400 feet deep and into the sea.

“At the time of the incident the motor vehicle was travelling in a northerly direction at Ambas in Vielle Case…,” [excerpted from Dominica News Online]

Yes, there were guard rails. But if you are traveling northerly at the time of the morning on the eastern side of Dominica, you’re likely to get sun glare, so it quite possibly could have been the contributing factor in this unfortunate situation.

Guard rails are meant to keep a vehicle from running off the road no matter why one runs into them.

So apparently ppl not allowed to speak their mind an make their comments without getting bullied for it on here, if yall read Sharon first comment, she wasn’t blaming or judging, simply stated it could have been alcohol or SPEED, so why everyone so quick to attack an judge her, doing exactly what yall telling her not to do.

That is a very sad story. It hurts and saddens ne even more when I see some of the comments posted by some. Let us remember their families who are now in pain. Please, let us not post negative stories.

Sharon Terrell apologised and we are still posting negativity towards her. She apologised, leave her alone.

As a St.Lucian we are thinking of you Dominica. Not all Lucians are negative.
