Barbados: Saint Lucian wounded in panty sale row

Barbados: Saint Lucian wounded in panty sale row

Barbados Today:-A young St Lucian woman who entered a lingerie store on Swan Street earlier this week to make a purchase, got more than she bargained for.

Danvela Emmanuel, who was in Barbados on vacation with four friends, told District ‘A’ Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant that she ended up suffering a wound to the head after she got into a verbal dispute with the store manager, 32-year-old Janeil Tranette Christopher of Reservoir Road, Lodge Hill, St Michael.

During the heated exchange, Christopher allegedly threw a “scotch tape holder” and a staple machine at the visitor who said she had entered the Bridgetown store around 5 p.m. with her friend and after finding the undergarment that she was searching for, decided to purchase it.

Her friend, who wanted a similar panty, decided to try on the piece of lingerie.

It was then that they reportedly turned to Christopher, who was operating the cashier machine, for assistance. However, she was apparently busy conducting a card transaction for one of two other customers.

After waiting for “15 minutes”, Emmanuel said she decided to ask the cashier whether she could pay for her purchase in cash as she had exact money.

“She told me to wait,” Emmanuel said.

The St Lucian visitor then turned to her friend and said in creole; “after we waiting so long she is rude in her mother ***.”

It was then that Christopher informed Emmanuel that she had understood what had been said, and two women began trading insults in creole.

At that point that Emmanuel decided she no longer wanted the garment and “threw it on the counter”.

“I walked away and felt something hit me to the back of my head. When I turned around and looked on the floor I saw the scotch tape holder. I picked it up and sent it back at the cashier, but it miss,” she told the magistrate.

“My friend then came and pushed me and a staple machine came flying right next to us,” she added.

On exiting the store, Emmanuel realized she was bleeding and reported the matter to police.

As a result, Christopher was charged with unlawfully and maliciously wounding Emmanuel on August 5.

During a lengthy cross-examination by Christopher’s attorney Vonda Pile on Wednesday, Emmanuel was adamant that even though she threw the garment on the counter while it was still on its hanger, she never hit Christopher. However, she did admit to asking for her item to be cashed before two other customers who were ahead of her.

Her friend and witness corroborated her story.

However, when the case resumed in the No.2 District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court this morning the St Lucian visitor, who was scheduled to take the stand for a second time, was a no show.

The matter, which is being prosecuted by Station Sergeant Glenda Carter-Nicholls, was therefore adjourned until November.

This is a message for all nationalities. We keep assuming that the person we are ‘letting having it’ in our native language, does not understand. There are too many apps teaching languages to take such chances. Besides, there are so many Bajans from Saint Lucia.

Last year I met a white Australian lady while in transit at Grantley Adams Intl. She spoke patois. Her parents are from Saint Lucia. Imagine my surprise.

Still, she should have extended your stay continue the process. Probably not the first person this happened to in this store.

I am thinking too, the stapler was meant for the friend who tried on the panty. Nobody does that. And you all making us look bad here in Saint Lucia. We know you don’t do that. You try on bras. Not panties.

Why you try on silky panty? What happen if you leave nasty brown skid mark from your “mud-hole”? Who going buy that after?

    We all make mistakes.

This is a fair warning to all people everywhere. Be careful when you ‘giving people their business’ in a different language. Bet she would not have tried that in Martinique. I met a white patois speaking Australian at Grantley Adams Intl last year. Apparently, her parents are Saint Lucian. Technology too has closed many gaps.
And the customer may be right but not always justified. Cursing for standing on a line like somebody forcing you to buy a panty which you cannot get anywhere else. Now, for a panty, you have to go and get cross examined for two days – a panty. That just there, seems fishy. However, you probably have a reason for not extending your stay to get justice. Afterall, you didn’t even aim properly and knock her back … what a defeat. I look forward to hearing what happens in November.
If she is the one involved is fashion, it’s a good thing she didn’t get knocked in the face. That would be sadder.

Here again we see the typical Lucian “Culture” at work. We don’t want to wait our turn nor take the line. Even when we travel we still expect others to accommodate our nasty bad habits.
Notwithstanding, at her age she should know that trying out panties is a NO-NO. Would she want panties with another woman’s car-car-lack juices on the crutch?
B’dos please forgive her. That isn’t a representation of us Lucians. Just a stray.

I think that the Scotch tape holder was mean’t for the crazy bitch pulling on those panties.
It was supposed to be used as a “gasket” between her “mud flaps” and the silk garment. Nobody wants your stinky juices on their unsold panty.

We are hearing only the visitor’s side.

In what manner was the customer told to wait that warranted the profanity against the manager? Was the manager sitting on her butt doing nothing?

Did the manager concede that she was not hit by the hangers? It is after the hangers were thrown that the holder was flung.

Did the Saint Lucian not return to court because she received cash settlement?

If the situation is so black and white, why are two days needed to cross examine just the Saint Lucian?

There are multiple issues to consider here.
        Customer service.
        Emotional intelligence of employees.
        Courteousness of visitors.
Customers’ feeling of entitlement and rights.
        Impatience and intolerance.

They are both wrong. Yet we cannot expect people not to react to our words. The manager wasn’t wrong and strong. The visitor was. If she was told to wait, which she did not want to, well put the panty back.

You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know you should not try on a panty….additionally stop speaking patois culturally we seem to love to do this. If she was the victim why did she fail to show up to conclude her case.
