UWI urged to discipline Doctor Tennyson Joseph

The General Secretary of Saint Lucia’s ruling United Workers Party (UWP),Oswald Augustin, wants the University of the West Indies (UWI) to discipline  Doctor Tennyson Joseph.

Joseph is Head of the Department of Government, Sociology and Social Work at the UWI Cave Hill Campus in Barbados.

He recently warned in a lecture against the rise of the businessman-politician in the Caribbean, citing Prime Minister Allen Chastanet and US President Donald Trump as examples of why businessmen as politicians are bad for society.

Chastanet responded on Monday by touting his ‘long and deep’ experience in government,  while accusing the University Lecturer of writing several ‘racist’ articles.

The Saint Lucia Prime Minister told reporters at a pre-cabinet news conference that he was surprised that Joseph was still a Professor at UWI given the articles he has been writing.

UWP General Secretary Oswald Augustin in an opinion piece published in St Lucia Times Tuesday, dismissed Joseph as a discredited politician.

Augustin said the UWI lecturer has written several articles in the past surrounding the current Saint Lucia Prime Minister which have been ignored.

He expressed the hope that the board of directors of UWI will take note of ‘these disparaging articles which remain meritless’ and take the ‘necessary and appropriate disciplinary action against a lecturer passing on warped ideas to his students’.

The UWP official accused Doctor Tennyson Joseph of making a mockery of his positon as a lecturer at the Cave Hill Campus.

“Tennyson Joseph’s obsession with Prime Minister Chastanet stems from the fact that his old boss of the Saint Lucia Labour Party was overwhelmingly defeated as Saint Lucians clearly rejected the left wing policy advocated by Tennyson Joseph,” Augustin stated.

Joseph unsuccessfully contested the 2006 general election in Saint Lucia against the UWP and worked as  political attaché to then Prime Minister  Doctor Kenny Anthony between 2000 and 2003.

Thing is, the white man knows how Black people think. He knows we love to tear down one another. He knows he only has to give those around him positions and semblance of power and let them lose. It’s a carbon copy of slavery days. Now notice he said it once and the House-slaves have picked it up and are trying to deprive a fellow black man the ability to feed himself and family. Chastanet knows exactly how the minds of the slaves worked. I rest my case.

And I also urge the General Secretary of the UWP to understand that he / she is throwing his massa under the bus with this statement, ‘Teddyson has an obsession with Chastanet.’ In that he or she has forgotten that this is not Chastanet’business, but a country. And everything including his PM’s office belongs to the taxpayers. And that he must be criticised either way. If he doesn’t want to be criticise resign, so St. Lucia 🇱🇨 can be this once prosperous land again.

I believe in free speech once it’ is not libelous. For Dr. Joseph to pass on his person animus with Mr. Chastanet to his impressionable students is an affront. If he had simply done this in a news article, no problem. What Dr. Joseph did was a monumental failure of commonsense. I’m sure one can find many businessmen who are/were successful politicians. He was imprecise with the truth solely to .disparage Mr. Chastanet. He should immediately desist from propagating such political animus. I hope his students have unapologetically rejected this false assertion.

President Obama once said ” it is not the magnitude of our problems that concerns me the most, it is the smallness of our politics.” Mr. Oswald Augustin has once again demonstrated the smallness of his politics by asking for the removal of Dr. Tennyson Joseph. This is tantamount to the subversion of democracy. The essence of democracy is to allow conflict between opposing parties. The genius of democracy is that you can disagree without being disagreeable because everyone has equal rights under the law. Mr. Augustin and the UWP are giving birth to a tyrannical majority by abusing the authority of government. Why is he and the current administration so fearful of the words of an innocuous professor?

Prime Minister Chastanet has been a disastrous leader: divisive, incompetent, heavy-handed and deaf to the wide segments of the society who do not share his vision. As a consequence, he will pick on anyone he perceives to be a threat. His problem is not Dr. Joseph per se but what he represents. Dr. Joseph is challenging the intellectual arrogance of the prime minister so the best exercise is to marginalize, intimidate and denigrate the professor.

Let us hope that the University of the West Indies grant academic freedom to all faculty and members of the institution to speak freely without any threat of reprisal. If academic freedom cannot be exercise then that institution of higher learning should cease to exist.

Oswald Augustin would not understand academic farless academic freedom. It is about time people with the intellectual capacity take their place in putting the politics into perspective. I wonder why St Lucia Times thought that was a useful observation from Augustin. Have we not had enough of Juke Bois philosophy or ‘out goes in’ with Andre, Russel and the Nincoompoop. It is time intellectuals and other men and women of letters let their voices be heard. Oswald let a man of some measure of intellect challenge Dr Joseph. Shut up

Mr. Augustin you honesty believe the “U” in UWI has the same meaning as the U in ur vindictive party. You and your party is ever so eager to destroy any one who attempts to expose your brainless dictator. The UWI is well managed by intellectuals and will never go down the gutter like your party and worthless government.

Notice how selfishly haters behave. Could this be you?👁 You decide.

Any person who is doing anything useful in the world will have some haters. Haters are divided into 2 categories, the first category are the good haters who hate you without trying to harm you or do anything bad to you.

Those are the ones who have some self control.
The second group of haters are the sick ones who will take actions in order to make the person they hate feel bad. Those actions don’t have to be big at all because each hater does the things that he is capable.

Negative comments, demotivating statements, negative reviews, bad mouthing are in many cases the product of hatred. The hater feels so bad when he sees the person he hates doing well and so he does his best to slow his progress down.

    Why haters hate
When a hater sees someone doing something that he can’t do he starts to think that he is worthless. Those feelings motivate the hater to try to stop the progress of the successful person by any means.
In other words, haters hate because they feel worthless. I ask again. Is this you👁

Augustin and Chastanet can’t take critics? Augustin is making a big effort to show his real face: Intolerance and punishment for expressing an opinion, I mean, for Augustine freedom of speech is a felony. Demanding to discipline a Doctor in Political Science for thinking differently? THIS IS FASCISM AUGUSTIN! it is call FASCISM. You can say what you want and Dr Joseph can’t? Every time someone critics the government has to be discipline? This is no democracy Augustin, what you are preaching here IS DICTATORSHIP! Are you a fascist with a mask of democracy?

Soooo we see how fascism is being normalised!? So the man is sharing his point of view, right or wrong is not for me to say, but he has a right to his opinion. But if his opinion is not favourable to the pm then he needs to be silenced? Ummmm anybody remember Sadaam Husein? What ever happen to freedom of speech?

Here comes an arrogant white man and his black lackeys in this post emancipation, post colonial period trying to silence an independent thinking black man because he has chosen to articulate his opinion. Chastanet a creature of white privilege now behaving like his progenitors the colonial boss, the slave master. Chastanet would do well to keep his baser instincts in check. The spirit of Walter Rodney and Marcus Garvey still reigns here.

The prime minister should do the same – focus on priorities and tune out the political noise. The fact is, the opposition is doing its job – opposing. So the prime minister needs to do his and focus on the needs of the country.
