Vincentian woman set on fire for refusing sex

A woman in St Vincent and the Grenadines is fighting for her life in hospital after she was set on fire in her bed after denying sex to her boyfriend, reports say.

Monique Clarke, 44, was wrapped up in her bed when her partner allegedly doused her with a flammable liquid before setting her alight on Sunday, reports I-Witness news.

Clarke had reportedly earlier denied the man’s request for sex and cash. The couple is reported to have been involved in an abusive relationship.

Doctors at the Milton Cato Memorial hospital have reportedly told the victim’s family that she suffered a mix of 2nd and 3rd degree burns.

Clarke has reportedly lost the use of one eye as a result of the attack and is said to be in immense pain.

The attack is said to have been witnessed by the victim’s 13 year old son.

“We just have to hope,” the victim’s sister Lesha Richardson told I-Witness news. “They (the doctors) said all they can do is try to lessen the possibility of her being infected – the wounds.”

“Her left arm is completely burnt, her neck, her face, her back, both of her legs and her feet,” Richardson added.

St Vincent and the Grenadines police say a young man has been assisting with their investigations into this incident.

Genuinlely empower women to not get involved with men who are abusive. This has to start from very early with young girls – from the home. Hence the importance of good parenting and raising good men. Its a whole cycle. If one part is broken, the whole thing will be affected. Ministry of social development, churches, schools, meet to work together.
