Guyana Chronicle:-A 37-year-old con artist was on Friday sentenced to nine years in jail by City Magistrate, Judy Latchman for swindling several women over fraudulent job employment.
Troy Webster confessed that, between August 17 and August 21, 2017, with intent to defraud, he obtained $7, 000 each from Nekeisha Haynes, Tamara Summerset, Marissa Williams, Kenisha Boyce, Lisa Prince and Anesia Jones, by falsely pretending that he was in a position to offer them jobs, knowing same to be false.
According to Police Prosecutor, Shawn Gonsalves, the accused had posed as a businessman in search of females to work as sales representatives at his store in Parika and Giftland.
The women, upon meeting Webster had handed over the monies along with a copy of their ID card with hopes of gaining a job. The man had told the women that he would have called them to inform when to start working.
However, the victims reported the matter to the Brickdam Police Station after they became suspicious since Webster never called. Webster was arrested and during police investigation it was revealed that the man was not a ‘businessman’, neither does he own any stores.
Gonsalves further pointed out that Webster was recently released from jail after serving three years of imprisonment for similar offences. Magistrate Latchman sentenced Webster to 18 months imprisonment on each charge, which will run consecutively. “Obviously you didn’t learn your lesson the last time,” the magistrate told the criminal.
