Students with red eye advised to stay away from school

The Ministry of Health and Wellness is advising students with conjunctivitis or red eye to refrain from attending school.

The advice comes as thousands of students across St Lucia return to school today for the new academic year.

“Infected students should refrain from attending school if their behaviour is such that close contact with other students cannot be avoided,” the Ministry advises.

St Lucia has recorded 2894 cases of red eye to date, authorities say.

Health officials say the reported cases of conjunctivitis continue to decrease, with the southern regions continuing to report the most number of cases.

Viral conjunctivitis is highly contagious. It is spread by contact, usually with objects which have come into contact with the infected person’s eye secretions.
