Gunman fires at police officer in Castries

A gunman and a police officer exchanged gunfire today, Tuesday 12, on Riverside Road, law enforcement sources have told St. Lucia Times.

The incident occurred at around 2:30 pm.

According to information, the officer, who was in civilian clothing at the time and walking with a female companion, was approached by an individual who informed him that a man with a gun had just come off a motorcycle and was heading up the road with an obvious intent on committing a crime.

It is reported that the officer, who was on vacation, went after the gunman and identifying himself as a police officer, ordered him to stop.

The gunman is said to have turned around and discharged four rounds in the direction of the officer, who returned fire.

The officer was not hit, law enforcement sources said.

The gunman then fled.

However it was not clear whether he had been injured.

There was a heavy police presence on the scene following the incident.

It comes against  the backdrop of a recent upsurge in gun violence which began on Saturday with a double murder at La Clery on Saturday morning in which two young men were gunned down by unknown assailants.

Hours later on Saturday afternoon a man was shot in the ankle at Riverside Road and Monday night two men were shot at Bocage.

This place is getting out of hand and the government is powerless. I knew that their election rhetoric would come back to bite them. It is clear that the situation have been worsened after the impacts report which was the criminals go ahead to do as they pleased. This cannot and should not be allowed to continue. The authorities should stamp out all this criminal activity immediately and forget about the United States aid for for the police we are sovereign nation we should deal with our police training and funding ourselves. It is only if a prominent person or their family member is killed will we realise how we have left this criminal situation Fester. It is Kenny Anthony who caused this making sure that the police will powerless to do anything when he reported all this nonsense to the US Embassy and the order the impacts investigation let us see what the government will do about it

i’m gonna ask a dumb question , would you like the police to be there before the crime happens , or arrest the individual before he commits the offence ?? i once thought like you but at what point do you want the police to be there and when they are around why don’t you’ll tell them where the crime is and who is committing the crime so they can be there ready to make the arrest

It is a dumb question and you should feel stupid for asking it. Have you ever been a victim of a crime and have had to wait for hours for police to show up after you make a report? And two disinterested cops.

The powers that be need to fix this fast or it will get closer to home, it’s not the first time police officers are getting shot at or attacked they are people who aren’t afraid of the cops because they have mob links or its not what u know it’s what u can prove, I pray innocent civilians don’t get hurt in they war for power, greed, respect, jealousy, let them fight themselves and get the bad seed out. (stop sending Lil boy officers to do a big man job). The system think they are safe but all hell has broken noise and soon they will be beating they chest like other innocent civilians who feels the pain, I have solutions to this crime problem but some people will never listen so I sit and watch but cover the important people around me with prayers

    September 12, 2017 at 10:04 pm

Who is this truth clown you must keep your dumb ads shut if you don’t know what your talking about. The officer did follow protocol cause he didn’t just shoot he gave a warning and he did ask the suspect to stop before he was fired upon so he was well within his rights to fire back.

He could not of done a better job in defence of the public against a possible perpitrator of homicide. I only wish he had composed himself and that his shots had met his intended target. Follow up should be an app on a armed and dangerous target with warrant of arrest in the first instance. If you know what good for you report your self cause it should not be safe for you out there and the whole country should be standind behind the police force. You are a threat to this country by firing after the police officer you have said that you are a law unto your self and we the people will not tolerate that.
