A gunman and a police officer exchanged gunfire today, Tuesday 12, on Riverside Road, law enforcement sources have told St. Lucia Times.
The incident occurred at around 2:30 pm.
According to information, the officer, who was in civilian clothing at the time and walking with a female companion, was approached by an individual who informed him that a man with a gun had just come off a motorcycle and was heading up the road with an obvious intent on committing a crime.
It is reported that the officer, who was on vacation, went after the gunman and identifying himself as a police officer, ordered him to stop.
The gunman is said to have turned around and discharged four rounds in the direction of the officer, who returned fire.
The officer was not hit, law enforcement sources said.
The gunman then fled.
However it was not clear whether he had been injured.
There was a heavy police presence on the scene following the incident.
It comes against the backdrop of a recent upsurge in gun violence which began on Saturday with a double murder at La Clery on Saturday morning in which two young men were gunned down by unknown assailants.
Hours later on Saturday afternoon a man was shot in the ankle at Riverside Road and Monday night two men were shot at Bocage.
